Gudipoodi Srihari Review

This is an ambitious project, featuring Maheshbabu, intending to be totally different from the routine. Though it is not new for the Telugu film makers to make cowboy films, this film scores in technical quality, with cinematographer Jayanan Vincent leading in his department. The visual is set against a kind of dusty hue throughout its run, reflecting the wild West. The background score by music director Mani Sarma is a fusion of east and West accentuating the effect of the scene. However, the songs don't make a big impact. On the other hand, song picturization brings us back to Indian soil.

It is a revenge seeking drama, with Raja (Mahesh) discovering the man who killed his father and sister, while seeking information on the location of a 'diamond valley' somewhere in Grand Canyon in the US. The film then slowly slips into the mould of the Hollywood super hit Mckenna's Gold.

The film opens showing Raja, riding a horse and looting bags with gold coins, from a train, in a prolonged adventure. His acts are silently witnessed by a one legged old man (Ashok Kumar), in an appreciative manner. Then a pair of cheats (Tanikella and Bipasha Basu), is introduced. They steal the gold coins from Raja, but soon get caught by the latter. He then comes across another girl (Lisa Ray) with whom he falls in love. The pair moves on and then come across the main villain of the show, Veeru (Rahul Dev), whom he finally recognizes by the scar on his forehand caused by Raja biting his hand in his childhood in order to save his sister being killed by Veeru.

Veeru is now on the trail of the valley of diamonds. He notices a map in the hands of Lisa, which she casually throws into a fire after studying it for a while. Veeru then abducts her and blackmails Raja saying he would release the girl only after they guide him to the valley. He also promises he would show the man who killed Raja's father and sister. Rest is Mckenna's Gold retold, with good conquering the evil.

Maheshbabu plays his role impressively, marked by his cool, demeanor in every scene. He also displays ease in action scenes, some of which are difficult compositions.

The locations are simply awesome - particularly those in the Grand Canyon. The two girls featured opposite Mahesh are adequate for this kind of drama. Rahul Dev looks fearful and the scenes featuring him are highly violent.
