Review

Story

naayakCharan (RamCharan) is an youngster in Hyderabad who works in a software company of his bachelor uncle (Brahmanandam). Siddharth Naayak (Ram Charan) is an inspiring young leader in Kolkata who fights against an evil man (Pradeep Rawat). The paths of Charan and Naayak cross in an interesting scenario. Rest of the story is all about how Charan helps Naayak in eradicating the bad men in Kolkata.

Artists Performance

naayakRam Charan: Ram Charan is slowly getting into the shoes of Chiranjeevi. His body language is very similar to that of Chiranjeevi in this movie. Charan character is lighter-veined one and Nayak character is a serious one. He has come up with tremendous steps in all songs - be it a melody or a fast number. However, there are no variations in these two characters as he need to confuse villains in the later part of the movie.

naayakOther actors: Kajal Agarwal and Amala Paul share screen presence with Ram Charan in the first half and second half respectively. Charmme who is looking slimmer has sizzled in ‘Nellore’ item song and she is pretty good. Jaya Prakash Reddy entertains with his typical rayalaseema accent. Posani Krishna Murali is hilarious in the second half as a rowdy who goes through reformation. Brahmanandam is very good as Jilebi, an old bachelor whose attempted match-fixing leads to the story in the first half. Pradeep Rawat is strictly average as main villain. Rahul Dev starts off as a villain and ends up as a comedian. Kota Srinivasa Rao is under-utilized. Rajiv Kanakala plays a small yet vital role. MS Narayana did his typical role of drunkard CBI officer.

Technical department

naayakStory - screenplay - direction: Story of the film is predictable, but has ample scope for having commercial elements. VV Vinayak who is known for his ability to catch the pulses of masses has played it to the galleries by having a lot references to mega family and having satires on film industry. He has inserted mass elements, violent fights, good songs and plenty comedy that work at box office. It has predictable screenplay, but a working one. After Krishna and Adurs, Vinayak banks well on comedy scenes (especially Jaya Prakash Reddy, Brahmanandam and Posani) which gives good entertainment amidst a serious/message-oriented story. One need to forget logics and logistics while watching the movie. Kolkata seems to be a sentiment destination for VV Vinayak.

naayakOther departments: Music by Thaman is a plus and all songs are well-picturised. Laila O Laila, Subhalekha and Hey Naayak are my favorites. Cinematography by Chota K Naidu is nice. Foreign locations chosen for songs are superb. Dialogues by Akula Siva are good (certain comedy dialogues are hilarious). Art direction by Anand Sai is appreciable. Action sequences are well choreographed. Editing by Gowtam Raju is alright. Production values by Universal Media are good.

Analysis

naayakNaayak is a film that is tailor-made for Ram Charan by incorporating commercial payoffs and entertainment. This film is made with the sole aim of making a hit. Hence you see lot of compromises on logics, aesthetics and finesse. The plus points are Ram Charan and entertainment (Jaya Prakash Reddy, Posani and Brahmanandam). On the flipside, the film lacks freshness and violence is a bit high. But who cares as long as it entertains? On a whole, Naayak is a film that is packed with all ingredients to become a hit and it flags off new year with success!
