Godfather Vs Sarkar - a comparision
tell a friend

30th June 2005

Ram Gopal Varma openly admitted that his latest film Sarkar is inspired by Francis Ford Coppola's Godfather. He also paid Sarkar as his tribute to Godfather. After watching the premiere of Sarkar, here is an attempt to compare scenes/theme of Godfather that was used in Sarkar.

Story of Sarkar:
Sarkar serves the society in his own way by solving the problems of the commoners who approach him. In that way he runs a parallel government. His son Shankar is not interested in these politics. Shankar completes studies in abroad and wants to start his own company in abroad. When Shankar visits India, his father is arrested. Shankar takes the responsibility taking care of his father who is in jail. A murder attempt happens on Sarkar in jail and Sarkar was later released on the bail. As Sarkar take the bed rest, Shankar takes up the mantle of finding out the culprits and assassinating them. As the movie end, Shankar is made as the new Sarkar with his father still alive.

Over all observation:
Movie starts and ends with scenes inspired by Godfather. The flow of story in first half takes the route of Godfather. But the second half is changed. If Godfather dealt with Mafia family, Sarkar deals with a family running alternative government. The traits of Sonny (short-temper & vice towards women) and Freddy (hatred for Godfather) are mixed into the character of Vishnu (Kay Kay). Godfather does not like discussing business matters while eating food with family members. Sarkar does not mind discussing business at dining table.
