In an industry where success ratio is dreadful, it’s a no mean feat to deliver eight successful films on the trot and writer-director Anil Ravipudi has achieved this rare distinction. While comedy has been the mainstay of his films except for Bhagavanth Kesari, there is a section which believes that his comedy is farcical, cringe (at times) and the logic in his stories goes for a toss.
Ravipudi has a simple answer for his critics. “Many people might have studied screenplay and direction. They have certain rules for it. The character should rise here, fall there…there’s a character arc etc…they speak a lot of things. I read some reviews which speak about the technical side. However, I don’t know all those things; I don’t know anything. I only know one kind of cinema. If I like a film, as a viewer I will whistle. I will clap as well. It is the cinema I know and I will continue making it. It is the cinema I have grown up watching. I haven’t read cinema. If audiences connect to a film and clap, I will do the same. If they whistle, I too will. If the character makes me emotional, I will get emotional. I will be in a theatre every Friday for a new release. If someone makes a better film than me, I will learn from him. If I commit some mistakes, I will face it. This has been my journey of eight films and it will be the same in the future as well,” the director, getting a little emotional, said at the success meet of his latest, Sankranthiki Vastunam, starring victory Venkatesh.
