Mega Power Star Ram Charan's rural action drama Peddi, directed by Buchi Babu Sana, produced on a massive scale by Venkata Satish Kilaru under the Vriddhi Cinemas banner and presented by Mythri Movie Makers and Sukumar Writings, is slated for a worldwide theatrical release on June 4th. Expectations for the movie have already reached enormous heights with chartbuster songs and stunning glimpses. Meanwhile, Production Designer Avinash Kolla shared insights about the movie.

How did you feel when Director Buchi Babu narrated this story?
In my ten-year career, this is the first time I have been this excited about a story. After the director narrated the story, I wasn't myself for about 20 minutes. It moved me that deeply. Because the story itself has so much strength, I decided right then that I needed to take extreme care in all aspects of the production design.

This is a period drama, right? What precautions did you take regarding the sets?
When a set is built for a movie, the audience shouldn't realize that it is a set. Only then is an Art Director successful. As far as I am concerned, the audience will not perceive the sets built for this film as sets. They are that natural.

This is a story set in the 70s and 80s. I have already worked on many period films. I have that experience. Peddi is a story set in the Vizianagaram area. We recreated the streets, the clock tower, and all of those elements. We also designed the surrounding areas of Vizianagaram. Similarly, we took great care with the wrestling and cricket games. We created a wrestling setup in this that no one has ever seen before. For that, we shot in an underground setup. The shot where Charan garu appears with a mace was filmed right there.

What about DOP Rathnavelu?
If the DOP and the Art Director are in sync, the film will definitely turn out perfectly. Such a great sync happened here. It was a great joy working with Rathnavelu. We worked with excellent coordination.

There is cricket in this, right? Will it be like Lagaan?
No. Lagaan is a story that happened during the British era. This is set in the mid-70s and 80s against a Vizianagaram backdrop. When you watch the cricket here, it will carry the exact natural feeling you get while sitting on the ridges of the fields in our villages watching a game.

We did pre-production for this film for over a year. During that time, we created miniatures for every single set. We built every set for this movie in an open ground. We shot entirely in natural light.

We needed a hill station town for this. We built that inside a Bhoot Bungalow (a haunted house) in Hyderabad. When you watch the movie, it will feel like a town situated at the foot of a hill. Building that set felt very challenging.

Director Buchi Babu and I worked with very good coordination. There is a sugarcane factory in this. That is also a set. However, the beauty of it is that you won't be able to spot even a single element as a set.

How many sets did you build for Peddi?
There are 24 sets built from scratch. Apart from that, there are easily around 60 to 70 setups. If it is a small film, we can go anywhere and shoot. But going out to shoot with such a massive star cast is no ordinary task. We can only shoot if we keep the locations within our comfort zone. It has been almost a year since we built the Vizianagaram set. It is convenient to shoot whenever we need it. We built that set so that it adapts to all weather conditions.

The bat used by the hero in this also comes from a very natural production design. The way a local village player would make a bat using whatever raw materials he can find—that bat looks just as natural. He also has a specific mannerism. All of those nuances were crafted into it.

Tell us about your bond with Charan?
Charan appreciated every set I built. The train setup, the special song set, the wrestling arena... he really liked every single one. Many people who came to meet Charan also mentioned that the sets look extremely natural.

How did Charan get injured?
It happened during the wrestling in an action sequence. Even in that condition, Charan immediately returned to the shoot. Because if we didn't shoot that month, all the artists' dates would have been missed. That is why he came right back and completed it.

About the story of Peddi?
This is a one-of-a-kind film. When you walk out of the theatre, your eyes will definitely well up with tears. You will travel that deeply with Peddi's journey. That emotion will absolutely be there.

Sukumar recently said that Charan's performance in this movie will surpass 'Rangasthalam'. The reason is that there is that much strength in this story.

The Paradise, as well as Chiranjeevi's film.

డైరెక్టర్ బుచ్చిబాబు గారు ఈ కథ చెప్పినప్పుడు ఎలా అనిపించింది?
-నా పదేళ్ల కెరీర్‌లో ఒక కథకి ఇంతలా ఎక్సైట్ అవ్వడం ఇదే ఫస్ట్ టైం. డైరెక్టర్ గారు కథ చెప్పిన తర్వాత ఒక 20 నిమిషాల పాటు నేను మనిషిని కాలేకపోయాను. అంతలా కదిలించింది. కథలోనే ఇంత బలం ఉంది కాబట్టి ప్రొడక్షన్ డిజైన్ పరంగా అన్ని విషయాల్లో చాలా కేర్ తీసుకోవాలని అప్పుడే డిసైడ్ అయ్యాను.

ఇది పీరియడ్ డ్రామా కదా.. సెట్స్ విషయంలో ఎలాంటి జాగ్రత్తలు తీసుకున్నారు?
-ఒక సినిమాకి సెట్ వేసినప్పుడు అది ఆడియన్స్‌కి సెట్ అని తెలియకపోవాలి. అప్పుడే ఒక ఆర్ట్ డైరెక్టర్ సక్సెస్ అయినట్టు. నా వరకు ఈ సినిమాకి వేసిన సెట్స్‌ను ఆడియన్స్ అవి సెట్ అని గ్రహించలేరు. అంత నేచురల్‌గా ఉంటాయి.

-ఇది 70-80లలో జరిగే కథ. ఇదివరకే చాలా పీరియడ్ సినిమాలు చేశాను. ఆ అనుభవం నాకు ఉంది.

-‘పెద్ది’ విజయనగరం ఏరియాలో జరిగే కథ. అక్కడి వీధులు, క్లాక్ టవర్ ఇవన్నీ కూడా రీ క్రియేట్ చేశాం. విజయనగరం చుట్టుపక్కల ప్రాంతాలు కూడా డిజైన్ చేశాం. అలాగే కుస్తీ, క్రికెట్ ఆటల విషయంలో కూడా చాలా కేర్ తీసుకున్నాం. ఇందులో ఇప్పటివరకు ఎవరూ చూడని కుస్తీ సెటప్ చేశాం. దానికోసం అండర్‌గ్రౌండ్ సెటప్‌లో షూట్ చేశాం. చరణ్ గారు గదతో కనిపించిన షాట్ అక్కడే చేశాం.

డీవోపీ రత్నవేలు గురించి?
డీవోపీకి, ఆర్ట్ డైరెక్టర్‌కి ఒక సింక్‌లో ఉంటే సినిమా ఖచ్చితంగా పర్ఫెక్ట్‌గా వస్తుంది. ఇందులో అలాంటి మంచి సింక్ కుదిరింది. రత్నవేలు గారితో పని చేయడం చాలా ఆనందంగా అనిపించింది. మంచి కోఆర్డినేషన్‌తో వర్క్ చేశాం.

ఇందులో క్రికెట్ ఉంది కదా.. ‘లగాన్’ లాగా ఉంటుందా?
లేదండి. ‘లగాన్’ బ్రిటిష్ కాలంలో జరిగిన కథ. ఇది 70-80 మధ్యలో విజయనగరం బ్యాక్‌డ్రాప్‌లో ఉంటుంది. మీరు క్రికెట్ చూస్తున్నప్పుడు మన ఊర్లో పొలాల గట్ల మీద కూర్చుని క్రికెట్ చూస్తే ఎలాంటి ఫీలింగ్ ఉంటుందో అంత నేచురల్ ఫీలింగ్ క్యారీ అవుతుంది.

-ఈ సినిమాకి ఏడాదికిపైగానే ప్రీ ప్రొడక్షన్ చేశాం. ఆ సమయంలోనే ప్రతి సెట్‌కు సంబంధించిన మినియేచర్స్ క్రియేట్ చేసుకున్నాం. ఈ సినిమాకి వేసిన ప్రతి సెట్‌ను కూడా ఓపెన్ గ్రౌండ్‌లోనే వేశాం. నేచురల్ లైట్‌లోనే తీశాం.

-ఇందులో ఒక హిల్ స్టేషన్ ఊరు కావాలి. అది హైదరాబాద్‌లోని ఒక బూత్ బంగ్లాలో వేశాం. మీరు సినిమా చూస్తున్నప్పుడు అది ఒక కొండ కింద ఉన్న ఊరిలా అనిపిస్తుంది. ఆ సెట్ వేయడం చాలా ఛాలెంజింగ్‌గా అనిపించింది.

-డైరెక్టర్ బుచ్చిబాబు గారు, నేను చాలా మంచి కోఆర్డినేషన్‌తో వర్క్ చేశాం. ఇందులో చెరుకు ఫ్యాక్టరీ ఉంటుంది. అది కూడా సెట్. కాకపోతే అందులో బ్యూటీ ఏంటంటే మీరు ఒక్కటీ కూడా సెట్ అని పసిగట్టలేరు.

‘పెద్ది’ కోసం ఎన్ని సెట్లు వేశారు?
-స్క్రాచ్ నుంచి వేసిన సెట్స్ 24 ఉంటాయి. అలా కాకుండా సెటప్స్ అయితే దాదాపు 60-70 పైగానే ఉంటాయి. చిన్న సినిమా అయితే మనం ఎక్కడికైనా వెళ్లి షూట్ చేసుకోవచ్చు. ఇంత పెద్ద స్టార్ కాస్ట్‌తో వెళ్లి షూట్ చేయడం మామూలు విషయం కాదు. లోకేషన్స్ మన కంఫర్ట్‌లో పెట్టుకుంటేనే షూట్ చేయగలుగుతాం. విజయనగరం సెట్ వేసి దాదాపు ఏడాది అవుతుంది. ఎప్పుడు కావాలిస్తే అప్పుడు షూట్ చేసుకోవడానికి వీలుగా ఉంటుంది. అన్ని వెదర్ కండిషన్స్‌కు అనుకూలంగా ఉండేలాగే ఆ సెట్ వేసాం.

-ఇందులో హీరో గారు వాడే బ్యాట్ కూడా చాలా నేచురల్ ప్రొడక్షన్ డిజైన్ నుంచి వచ్చింది. ఒక దేశీ ఆటగాడు తనకు దొరికే ముడిసరుకులతో బ్యాట్‌ని ఎలా తయారు చేసుకుంటాడో ఆ బ్యాట్ కూడా అంతే నేచురల్‌గా ఉంటుంది. అలాగే తనకు ఒక మేనరిజం ఉంటుంది. అవన్నీ కూడా అందులో రూపొందించడం జరిగింది.

చరణ్ గారితో మీ బాండింగ్ గురించి?
-నేను వేసిన ప్రతి సెట్‌ని చరణ్ గారు అప్రిషియేట్ చేశారు. ట్రైన్ సెటప్, స్పెషల్ సాంగ్ సెట్, కుస్తీ... ఇలా ప్రతి సెట్ ఆయనకి చాలా నచ్చాయి. చరణ్ గారిని కలవడానికి వచ్చిన చాలామంది కూడా సెట్స్ చాలా నేచురల్‌గా ఉన్నాయని చెప్పారు.

చరణ్ గారికి గాయం ఎలా అయింది?
యాక్షన్ సీక్వెన్స్‌లో కుస్తీ సమయంలో అయింది. అలాంటి కండీషన్‌లో కూడా చరణ్ గారు వెంటనే మళ్లీ షూటింగ్‌లోకి వచ్చారు. ఎందుకంటే ఆ నెల షూట్ చేయకపోతే ఆర్టిస్ట్ డేట్స్ అన్నీ మిస్ అయిపోతాయి. అందుకే మళ్లీ వెంటనే వచ్చి చేశారు.

‘పెద్ది’ కథ గురించి?
ఇది వన్ ఆఫ్ ఇట్స్ కైండ్ ఫిల్మ్. థియేటర్ నుంచి బయటకు వచ్చినప్పుడు ఖచ్చితంగా కళ్లల్లో నీళ్లు తిరుగుతాయి. ‘పెద్ది’ జర్నీతో అంతలా ట్రావెల్ అవుతారు. కచ్చితంగా ఆ ఎమోషన్ అయితే ఉంటుంది.

-సుకుమార్ గారు మొన్న ఈ సినిమాలో చరణ్ పర్ఫార్మెన్స్ ‘రంగస్థలం’కి మించి ఉంటుందని అన్నారు. దానికి కారణం ఈ కథలో అంత బలం ఉంది.
