Shaṣṭhipūrti, featuring Dr. Rajendra Prasad and actress Archana in lead roles, with Rupesh playing the hero and also producing the film under the MAA AAIE Productions banner, is directed by Pawan Prabha. Akanksha Singh plays the female lead. The film is set to release on May 30. As the release date approaches, director Pawan Prabha shared many insights about the film. Here’s what he had to say:

I studied hotel management. Everyone in my family is traditionally into music. But from a young age, I developed a strong interest in films. I believe cinema can be a medium to convey good values. That belief is what eventually brought me into the industry. I worked in the direction department for the film Fitting Master. In fact, I even appear in a small scene in that film.

There was a long gap in my film journey. During these years, I understood what cinema truly is. For Shaṣṭhipūrti, I explored many places. From the beginning, I was fixed on having Ilaiyaraaja sir onboard. Many questioned how I could possibly bring him in. Family dramas require a large cast, and scheduling dates takes time. Shooting itself takes a while. But I was determined to make this film. That’s why it took so many years.

I come from a large joint family. I know what it means to be surrounded by love—from my grandfather, grandmothers, aunts, and uncles. But nowadays, some people see even their parents as a burden. Some are abandoning them on the streets. I made Shaṣṭhipūrti to showcase the greatness of parents and the value of their love. The film, releasing on May 30, will have many surprising elements that go beyond what has been shown in the promos so far.

From the beginning, I had complete clarity about Shaṣṭhipūrti. It takes immense courage to ask artists like Rajendra Prasad garu or Archana garu for a second take. If they ask why, I should be in a position to explain clearly and convincingly. I had to be prepared to tell them exactly how to perform. I transitioned their characters from a younger look to an older one. I portrayed Archana garu as a strict mother and Rajendra Prasad garu as a jovial father.

Everyone has praised the Shaṣṭhipūrti trailer. People feel there’s something special in the film. Particularly, many are talking about the background score. There’s also a vintage portion in the film.

For an emotional drama like Shaṣṭhipūrti—a story centered on parental sentiment—music is very important. That’s why I wanted Ilaiyaraaja sir for this project. I shot the entire story in the Godavari region. I first narrated the story to Rupesh garu. Initially, he didn’t plan on producing it. But after hearing the story, he completely took it upon himself. It was because of him that I got to meet Ilaiyaraaja sir. When I narrated the story to Raja sir, I told him, “This story is set on the banks of the Godavari… such a story needs your music.” What people say about him outside is all wrong—he gave us multiple tune options for just one song. We even filmed some making videos while he was composing.

Ilaiyaraaja sir asked me to narrate the story without song situations. He said he would decide where songs should come. When I went for the first composition, he played the pallavi (refrain) on the harmonium immediately after I described the situation. Then he asked, “Is this enough? Is this what you expected? Or should I try something else?” He gave us multiple options for every song and composed all of them within moments. Chaitanya Prasad garu, Rehman garu, and Keeravani garu wrote beautiful lyrics for this film.

Initially, I thought Chaitanya Prasad garu and Rehman garu would each write three songs. But after hearing the tunes, I changed my mind. I felt someone like Keeravani garu would be a better fit. I discussed this with Rupesh garu and Chaitanya Prasad garu. Chaitanya Prasad garu said, “It would be great if Keeravani garu wrote a song under Ilaiyaraaja garu’s musical direction.” So, we approached Keeravani garu—and he immediately agreed. That was a big stroke of luck for me.

Both Rupesh and Akanksha acted wonderfully. Rupesh’s character has many layers. Akanksha plays a traditional Telugu girl. Her role is quite unique. After this film, she will definitely have a brighter future.

Shaṣṭhipūrti is a completely fictional film. The characters in it can’t exist in real life. The character played by Rajendra Prasad garu is not something you’d find in the outside world. To believe in such a story and invest in it is no ordinary thing. When we narrate a story, if the producer feels what we feel, only then can the film move forward. Producing films like this is much harder than directing them. Our Shaṣṭhipūrti is coming as a strong family emotional drama. It will linger in people’s hearts for days. My film is like a nourishing home-cooked meal. The censor board didn’t suggest a single cut for our movie.

I already have a few projects ready after Shaṣṭhipūrti. The stories are finalized. I’ll announce all the details soon. But with this film, I’ve learned a lot—which will definitely help me in the future.

డా. రాజేంద్ర ప్రసాద్, నటి అర్చన ప్రధాన పాత్రల్లో రూపేశ్ హీరోగా, నిర్మాతగా మా ఆయి (MAA AAIE) ప్రొడక్షన్స్ పతాకంపై పవన్ ప్రభ తెరకెక్కించిన చిత్రం ‘షష్టిపూర్తి’. ఈ మూవీలో ఆకాంక్ష సింగ్ ప్రధాన పాత్రను పోషించారు. ఈ సినిమాను మే 30న విడుదల చేయబోతోన్నారు. రిలీజ్ డేట్ దగ్గర పడుతున్న క్రమంలో దర్శకుడు పవన్ ప్రభ ‘షష్టిపూర్తి’ గురించి ఎన్నో విషయాల్ని పంచుకున్నారు. ఆయన చెప్పిన సంగతులివే..

నేను హోటల్ మేనేజ్మెంట్ చేశాను. మా ఇంట్లో అంతా ట్రెడిషనల్ సింగర్సే ఉంటారు. నాకు చిన్నతనం నుంచే సినిమాలపై మక్కువ ఏర్పడింది. సినిమాలతోనే మనం మంచిని చెప్పగలమని నమ్ముతాను. అలా నేను చివరకు ఇండస్ట్రీలోకి వచ్చాను. ‘ఫిట్టింగ్ మాస్టర్’ సినిమాకు డైరెక్షన్ టీంలో పని చేశాను. ఆ సినిమాలో ఓ చోట, ఓ చిన్న సీన్‌లో కూడా నేను కనిపిస్తాను.

సినిమా విషయంలో నాకు చాలా గ్యాప్ వచ్చింది. ఇన్నేళ్లలో సినిమా అంటే ఏంటో ఇంకా నేర్చుకున్నాను. నేను ఈ ‘షష్టిపూర్తి’ గురించి చాలా చోట్ల తిరిగాను. ఇళయరాజా గారు కావాల్సిందే అని ముందు నుంచీ ఫిక్స్ అయ్యాను. ఇళయరాజా గారు ఎలా వస్తారు? అని చాలా మంది అంటుండేవారు. ఫ్యామిలీ డ్రామాకు ఎక్కువ క్యాస్టింగ్ కావాల్సి ఉంటుంది. ఇలాంటి చిత్రాలకు డేట్లు అడ్జస్ట్ అవ్వాలి.. షూటింగ్‌కి టైం పడుతుంది. కానీ నేను ఈ సినిమానే చేయాలని ఫిక్స్ అయ్యాను. అందుకే ఇన్నేళ్లు పట్టింది.

మాది చాలా పెద్ద ఉమ్మడి కుటుంబం. నాకు అందరి ప్రేమ తెలుసు. తాతయ్య, అమ్మమ్మ, నానమ్మ, పిన్నమ్మ, పెద్దమ్మ, మేనత్త ఇలా అందరి మధ్య పెరిగాను. కానీ ఇప్పుడు కొందరికి అమ్మానాన్నలు కూడా బరువు అవుతున్నారు. నడి రోడ్డు మీద వారిని వదిలేస్తున్నారు. అమ్మానాన్నల గొప్పదనాన్ని, ప్రేమ విలువను చెప్పాలనే ఉద్దేశంతోనే ‘షష్టిపూర్తి’ని తీశాను. ఇప్పటి వరకు ‘షష్టిపూర్తి’ గురించి చూసిన దాని కంటే మే 30వ తేదీని మీరు సర్ ప్రైజ్ అయ్యే అంశాలెన్నో సినిమాలో ఉంటాయి.

‘షష్టిపూర్తి’ విషయంలో నేను ముందు నుంచీ చాలా క్లారిటీతో ఉన్నాను. రాజేంద్ర ప్రసాద్ గారు, అర్చన గారిని నేను మళ్లీ రెండో టేక్ అని అడగాలంటే ఎంత ధైర్యం కావాలి. ఎందుకు అని వారు ప్రశ్నిస్తే.. సమాధానం చెప్పేలా, క్లారిటీ ఇచ్చే స్థాయిలో నేను ప్రిపేర్ అవ్వాలి. అసలు వాళ్లు ఎలా చేయాలో చెప్పే స్థాయిలో నేను ఉండాలి. వాళ్లని యంగ్ లుక్‌లోకి తీసుకెళ్లి.. మళ్లీ ఓల్డ్ లుక్‌లోకి తీసుకు వచ్చాను. ఓ స్ట్రిక్ట్‌ మదర్‌ ఎలా ఉంటారో అలానే చూపించాను. ఓ జోవియల్ ఫాదర్‌ ఎలా ఉండాలో అలా రాజేంద్ర ప్రసాద్ గారిని చూపించాను.

‘షష్టిపూర్తి’ ట్రైలర్‌ను అందరూ మెచ్చుకుంటారు. సినిమాలో ఏదో విషయం ఉందని అంతా అంటున్నారు. మరీ ముఖ్యంగా బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ మ్యూజిక్ గురించి మాట్లాడుతున్నారు. అందరూ ప్రశంసలు కురిపిస్తున్నారు. ఈ చిత్రంలో కొంత వింటేజ్ పార్ట్ కూడా ఉంటుంది.

‘షష్టిపూర్తి’ లాంటి ఎమోషనల్ డ్రామాకి, తల్లిదండ్రుల సెంటిమెంట్ మీద రాసుకున్న కథకు మ్యూజిక్ చాలా ప్రాధాన్యం. అందుకే నేను ఈ చిత్రానికి ఇళయరాజా గారు కావాలని అనుకున్నాను. ఈ కథ మొత్తాన్ని గోదావరి ప్రాంతంలోనే తీశాను. ఈ కథను ముందుగా రూపేశ్ గారికి చెప్పాను. ముందుగా ఆయనకు సినిమాను నిర్మించే ఆలోచన లేదు. కానీ ఈ కథను విన్నాక మొత్తం తన భుజాన వేసుకున్నారు. ఆయన వల్లే ఇళయరాజా గారిని కలిశాను. ఈ కథను రాజా గారు విన్నారు. గోదావరి ఒడ్డున ఈ కథ ఉంటుంది.. అలాంటి కథకు మీరే మ్యూజిక్ ఇవ్వాలని చెప్పాను. ఆయన గురించి బయట వినేవన్నీ తప్పు. ఆయన మాకు ఒక పాట కోసం ఎన్నో ట్యూన్లు ఇచ్చారు. ఆయన కంపోజ్ చేస్తుంటే మేకింగ్ వీడియోల్ని కూడా తీశాం.

పాటల సిట్యువేషన్‌ను తీసేసి కథను చెప్పమని ఇళయరాజా గారు అన్నారు. ఎక్కడ పాట రావాలో నేను చెబుతాను అని ఆయనే చెప్పారు. ఇక ఫస్ట్ కంపోజిషన్ కోసం మళ్లీ వెళ్లాం. సిట్యువేషన్ చెప్పిన వెంటనే హార్మోనియం మీద పల్లవి ప్లే చేసి వినిపించారు. ‘ఇది సరిపోతుందా? మీరు ఆశించినట్టుగా ఉందా? ఇంకా ఏమైనా ట్రై చేద్దామా?’ అని ఇళయరాజా గారు అన్నారు. ప్రతీ పాటకు మాకు ఎన్నో ఆప్షన్స్ ఇచ్చారు. అన్ని పాటల్ని క్షణాల్లో కంపోజ్ చేసి ఇచ్చారు. చైతన్య ప్రసాద్ గారు, రెహమాన్ గారు, కీరవాణి గారు ఈ చిత్రానికి మంచి పాటలు రాశారు.

చైతన్య ప్రసాద్ గారు మూడు పాటలు, రెహమాన్ గారు మూడు పాటలు అని ముందు అనుకున్నాను. ట్యూన్స్ విన్నాక నా అభిప్రాయం మారింది. కీరవాణి గారి లాంటి వారు రాస్తే బాగుంటుందని అనిపించింది. అదే విషయాన్ని రూపేశ్ గారికి, చైతన్య ప్రసాద్ గారికి చెప్పాను. ఇళయరాజా గారి సంగీత సారథ్యంలో కీరవాణి గారు పాట రాయడం అంటే చాలా మంచి విషయం అవుతుంది అని చైతన్య ప్రసాద్ గారు అన్నారు. అలా కీరవాణి గారిని అప్రోచ్ అయ్యాం. ఆయన కూడా వెంటనే ఒప్పుకున్నారు. ఇదంతా నా అదృష్టం.

రూపేశ్, ఆకాంక్ష ఇద్దరూ అద్భుతంగా నటించారు. రూపేశ్ కారెక్టర్‌లో చాలా షేడ్స్ ఉంటాయి. ఆకాంక్ష అచ్చమైన తెలుగమ్మాయి పాత్రలో కనిపిస్తారు. ఆమె పాత్ర చాలా కొత్తగా ఉంటుంది. ఈ సినిమా తరువాత ఆమెకు మరింత మంచి భవిష్యత్తు ఉంటుంది.

‘షష్టిపూర్తి’ అనేది పూర్తిగా కల్పిత చిత్రమే. ఇందులో ఉండే పాత్రల్లా బయట బతకలేరు. రాజేంద్ర ప్రసాద్ గారు పోషించిన పాత్ర బయట కనిపించదు. ఇలాంటి కథను నమ్మి పెట్టుబడి పెట్టడం అంటే మామూలు విషయం కాదు. మనం కథను చెప్పేటప్పుడు.. మనం ఏం ఫీల్ అవుతామో.. అవతల ఉన్న నిర్మాత కూడా అదే ఫీల్ అయితే సినిమా ముందుకు వస్తుంది. ఇలాంటి చిత్రాల్ని డైరెక్ట్ చేయడం కంటే ప్రొడ్యూస్ చేయడం కష్టం. మంచి ఫ్యామిలీ ఎమోషనల్ డ్రామాగా మా ‘షష్టిపూర్తి’ రాబోతోంది. కొన్ని రోజుల పాటు ఈ చిత్రం అందరినీ వెంటాడుతూ ఉంటుంది. నా చిత్రం పెరుగన్నం లాంటిది. సెన్సార్‌ వాళ్లు మా చిత్రానికి ఒక్క కట్ కూడా చెప్పలేదు.

‘షష్టిపూర్తి’ తరువాత కొన్ని ప్రాజెక్టులు రెడీగా ఉన్నాయి. కథలు సిద్దంగానే ఉన్నాయి. అన్ని వివరాల్ని త్వరలోనే ప్రకటిస్తాను. ఈ చిత్రంతో మాత్రం నేను ఎంతో నేర్చుకున్నాను. అది నాకు భవిష్యత్తులో ఉపయోగపడుతుంది.
