National crush Rashmika Mandanna and talented actor Dheekshith Shetty star together in this movie titled “The Girlfriend.” The film is being jointly produced by Geetha Arts and Dheeraj Mogilineni Entertainment, presented by veteran producer Allu Aravind. Director Rahul Ravindran has crafted an intense, emotional love story, with Dheeraj Mogilineni and Vidya Koppineedi serving as producers.

The movie, which is set to be a refreshing new-age love story, will have its grand theatrical release worldwide - in Hindi and Telugu on the 7th of this month, followed by Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada versions on the 14th. During a recent interview, producers Dheeraj Mogilineni and Vidya Koppineedi shared key highlights about the film.

Producer Dheeraj Mogilineni said:
During the lockdown, theaters were closed. Once they reopened, we were in the process of developing this script. From the moment we took on the project, we planned to go for a theatrical release. As producers, we always wish for a film to have commercial appeal, but we loved this story so much that we were willing to take the risk, regardless of the outcome.

Vidya and I share a great bond, and we never had any issues when it came to making production decisions. Love stories should be told from a particular point of view - in this case, it’s from the heroine’s perspective. That’s why we couldn’t cast big stars; we needed strong performers. Dheekshith is a wonderful performer. Just like Rashmika, he completely owned his character. Among the actors I know in this age group, I felt Dheekshith was perfect for this role - and once you see the movie, you’ll feel the same.

We are distributing “The Girlfriend” ourselves because we believe it will work very well theatrically. We didn’t cast Dheekshith thinking of the Kannada market advantage, but because he fit the role perfectly. However, with both Rashmika and Dheekshith, we’ll naturally have an added advantage in Kannada.

Many big Telugu films are now being released in Kannada as well. Smaller films are also trying this, but sometimes scheduling issues prevent that. Our plan is to release “The Girlfriend” in Hindi and Telugu on the 7th, followed by Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam on the 14th. We’re also planning an event in Mumbai.

Director Rahul Ravindran’s first film Chi La Sow worked really well for its budget and even won a National Award. His second film Manmadhudu 2 had different dynamics. We didn’t look at his previous films - we were simply drawn to this story and decided to produce it. Rashmika didn’t take any remuneration for this movie, and out of gratitude, we’re giving her double the amount now.

Anu Emmanuel also plays an important role in the film. It’s more than a guest appearance - the character suits her perfectly. Usually, before a movie’s release, there’s a bit of tension, but with “The Girlfriend,” what we envisioned is exactly what we see on screen, so we’re feeling calm and happy. The release date is perfect, and we’re planning premieres a couple of days in advance, with dates to be announced soon.

After COVID, audiences are returning to theaters only for strong content. We’re choosing only those stories that truly work theatrically. We have excellent support from Geetha Arts and Allu Aravind garu, and we’ve learned a lot from him. After this film’s release, we’ll be announcing a new project.

Producer Vidya Koppineedi said:
When we first heard the story of “The Girlfriend,” we immediately connected with it. It’s not a regular commercial story. Every viewer will take away a message after watching it. Even though it’s not in the typical commercial format, Dheeraj and I decided to take the risk because we both genuinely loved the story. The censor board members even praised the director, saying it’s the kind of film that could win a National Award.

Since both of us are producers, we shared all production-related responsibilities equally. Every decision was taken collectively after discussion. Even when selecting stories, we make decisions together. We always have Allu Aravind garu’s strong support behind every project.

Love stories are always pleasant to watch, and both youth and family audiences enjoy them. We are interested in doing love stories that feel fresh and emotionally strong. We didn’t deliberately choose it because it’s women-centric - the story naturally took that form. Though inspired by some real-life incidents, most of the script is original.

We shot most of the film on a college campus. Colleges usually don’t allow filming during working days, and at that time, Rashmika was working on two or three big projects in different cities. Because of that, there were a few date-related delays, but otherwise, the shoot went smoothly. Towards the end, there was a workers’ strike, but since the film was already in its final stage, it didn’t affect us much.

We decided on Hesham Abdul Wahab as the music director right at the beginning, and he’s delivered excellent music for the film. There are four full songs and two bit songs. This isn’t a women-centric movie - it’s a love story set against a college backdrop. Audiences will definitely relate to it, as it will remind them of their own or their friends’ love stories.

We never planned to make this film with Samantha. From the beginning, we had Rashmika in mind for this script. She personally loved the story, so there were no discussions or changes needed from her side. In today’s times, we take up projects only after careful thought, and that’s also the kind of advice Allu Aravind garu always gives us.

- లాక్ డౌన్ టైమ్ లో థియేటర్స్ క్లోజ్ అయ్యాయి. ఆ తర్వాత థియేటర్స్ అన్నీ అందుబాటులోకి వచ్చాయి. ఆ టైమ్ లో స్క్రిప్ట్ డెవలప్ చేసే దశలో ఉన్నాం. థియేటర్స్ అన్నీ ఓపెన్ అయ్యాక ఈ సినిమాను థియేట్రికల్ గా రిలీజ్ చేయాలని అనుకున్నాం. మేము ఈ ప్రాజెక్ట్ టేకోవర్ చేసినప్పటి నుంచి థియేట్రికల్ గానే వెళ్లేందుకు ప్లాన్ చేశాం. ప్రొడ్యూసర్ గా కమర్షియల్ గా మూవీ ఉండాలని కోరుకుంటాం. కానీ మేము రిస్క్ చేసినా ఫర్వాలేదు అనేంత బాగా ఈ స్టోరీ నచ్చింది.

- విద్య గారితో మంచి బాండింగ్ ఉంది. ప్రొడక్షన్ వైజ్ డెసిషన్స్ తీసుకోవడంలో ఎలాంటి ఇబ్బంది రాలేదు. మనం లవ్ స్టోరీస్ ను ఎవరో ఒకరి పాయింట్ ఆఫ్ వ్యూలో చెప్పాలి. ఈ కథ హీరోయిన్ కోణంలో ఉంటుంది. అలాంటప్పుడు స్టార్స్ ను ఈ మూవీకి హీరోగా తీసుకోలేం. పర్ ఫార్మర్స్ నే తీసుకోవాలి. దీక్షిత్ మంచి పర్ ఫార్మర్. రశ్మిక లాగే తన క్యారెక్టర్ లో ఆకట్టుకునేలా నటించాడు. ఈ ఏజ్ గ్రూప్ లో నాకు తెలిసిన వాళ్లలో దీక్షిత్ ఈ మూవీకి పర్పెక్ట్ అనిపించింది. సినిమా చూశాక మీకూ అదే ఫీల్ కలుగుతుంది.

- "ది గర్ల్ ఫ్రెండ్" సినిమాను మేమే సొంతంగా డిస్ట్రిబ్యూట్ చేస్తున్నాం. థియేట్రికల్ గా ఈ మూవీ బాగా వర్కవుట్ అవుతుందని నమ్ముతున్నాం. దీక్షిత్ ను తీసుకోవడం వల్ల కన్నడ మార్కెట్ కు ఉపయోగపడుతుందని అనుకోలేదు, ఆ క్యారెక్టర్ కు ఆయన కరెక్ట్ గా సెట్ అవుతాడనే తీసుకున్నాం. అయితే రశ్మిక, దీక్షిత్ ఉండటం వల్ల కన్నడలో అడ్వాంటేజ్ అవుతుంది.

- తెలుగులో వస్తున్న పెద్ద సినిమాలను కన్నడ వెర్షన్ లో రిలీజ్ చేస్తున్నారు. చిన్న సినిమాలూ ఇలా ట్రై చేస్తున్నా కొన్నిసార్లు టైమ్ సరిపోక కన్నడ వెర్షన్ లో రిలీజ్ చేయడం లేదు. "ది గర్ల్ ఫ్రెండ్" సినిమాను ఈ నెల 7న హిందీ, తెలుగులో రిలీజ్ చేస్తున్నాం. మరో వారం తర్వాత ఈ నెల 14న తమిళ, కన్నడ, మలయాళంలో రిలీజ్ చేస్తాం. ముంబైలో ఒక ఈవెంట్ చేయాలనే ప్లాన్ ఉంది.

- డైరెక్టర్ రాహుల్ రవీంద్రన్ చేసిన ఫస్ట్ మూవీ చి.ల.సౌ ఆ సినిమా బడ్జెట్ కు బాగా వర్కవుట్ అయ్యింది. నేషనల్ అవార్డ్ కూడా వచ్చింది. ఆయన సెకండ్ మూవీ మన్మథుడు 2 డైనమిక్స్ వేరు. గతంలో రాహుల్ చేసిన ప్రాజెక్ట్స్ గురించి కాకుండా మేము కథ బాగా నచ్చి ఈ మూవీ ప్రొడ్యూస్ చేశాం. రశ్మిక ఈ సినిమాకు రెమ్యునరేషన్ తీసుకోలేదు కాబట్టి ఆ కృతజ్ఞతతో రెట్టింపు పారితోషికం ఇస్తున్నాం.

- అనూ ఇమ్మాన్యుయేల్ మంచి రోల్ చేసింది. తనది గెస్ట్ రోల్ కంటే పెద్ద క్యారెక్టర్. ఈ క్యారెక్టర్ కు ఆమె పర్పెక్ట్ గా కుదిరింది. మామూలుగా సినిమా రిలీజ్ అంటే చివరిదాగా టెన్షన్ పడుతుంటాం. కానీ "ది గర్ల్ ఫ్రెండ్" సినిమా విషయంలో మేము నమ్మింది స్క్రీన్ మీద కనిపిస్తోంది. సో హ్యాపీగా టెన్షన్ లేకుండా ఉన్నాం. రిలీజ్ కు మంచి డేట్ దొరికింది. రెండు రోజుల ముందే ప్రీమియర్స్ ప్లాన్ చేస్తున్నాం. ఎప్పుడు అనేది డేట్స్ అనౌన్స్ చేస్తాం.

- కోవిడ్ తర్వాత ప్రేక్షకుల్ని థియేటర్స్ కు రప్పించాలంటే మంచి కంటెంట్ ఉంటేనే సాధ్యమవుతోంది. థియేట్రికల్ గా ఇది బాగుంటుంది అనే స్టోరీస్ ను మాత్రమే సెలెక్ట్ చేసుకుంటున్నాం. గీతా ఆర్ట్స్, అరవింద్ గారి నుంచి మాకు మంచి సపోర్ట్ ఉంటుంది. ఆయన నుంచి చాలా విషయాలు నేర్చుకున్నాం. ఈ సినిమా రిలీజ్ అయ్యాక కొత్త ప్రాజెక్ట్ అనౌన్స్ చేస్తాం.

విద్య కొప్పినీడి మాట్లాడుతూ

- "ది గర్ల్ ఫ్రెండ్" సినిమా కథ విన్నప్పుడే మేము స్టోరీకి బాగా కనెక్ట్ అయ్యాం. ఇది రెగ్యులర్ కమర్షియల్ స్టోరీ కాదు. ఈ సినిమా చూశాక ప్రతి ఒక్కరూ ఒక మెసేజ్ ను తీసుకుంటారు. ఇది కమర్షియల్ ఫార్మేట్ స్టోరీ కాకపోయినా రిస్క్ తీసుకోవాలని నేను ధీరజ్ అనుకున్నాం, మా ఇద్దరికీ కథ బాగా నచ్చింది. సెన్సార్ వాళ్ల దగ్గర నుంచి డైరెక్టర్ కు నేషనల్ అవార్డ్ దక్కుతుందనే ప్రశంసలు వచ్చాయి.

- ఇద్దరం ప్రొడ్యూసర్స్ కాబట్టి ప్రొడక్షన్ కు సంబంధించిన ఏ వర్క్ అయినా షేర్ చేసుకునే చేశాం. ప్రతి డెసిషన్ కలెక్టివ్ గా డిస్కస్ చేసి తీసుకున్నాం. స్టోరీస్ సెలెక్షన్ విషయంలోనూ ఉమ్మడిగానే నిర్ణయాలు తీసుకుంటాం. మా ప్రాజెక్ట్ వెనక అరవింద్ గారి సపోర్ట్ ఎప్పుడూ ఉంటుంది.

- లవ్ స్టోరీస్ చూడటానికి బాగుంటాయి. యూత్, ఫ్యామిలీ ఆడియెన్స్ అంతా చూసి ఎంజాయ్ చేస్తారు. లవ్ స్టోరీస్ లోనే ఏదైనా కొత్తగా ఉండి స్ట్రాంగ్ ఫీల్ ఉంటే అలాంటి సినిమాలు చేయాలని అనుకుంటాం. వుమెన్ సెంట్రిక్ అని కావాలని సెలెక్ట్ చేసుకున్నది కాదు కథ ఆ తరహాలో ఉంటుంది. "ది గర్ల్ ఫ్రెండ్" సినిమా రియల్ ఇన్సిడెంట్స్ తో ఇన్స్ పైర్ అయి రాసినా, మిగతా అంతా స్క్రిప్ట్ చేసుకున్నదే.

- "ది గర్ల్ ఫ్రెండ్" సినిమా షూటింగ్ ఎక్కువగా ఒక కాలేజ్ లో చేశాం. వర్కింగ్ డేస్ లో కాలేజ్ లు ఇవ్వరు. అప్పటికి రశ్మిక రెండు మూడు బిగ్ ప్రాజెక్ట్స్ చేస్తున్నారు. వాటి షూటింగ్ వేరే సిటీస్ లో జరిగేది. దాంతో కొంత డేట్స్ వల్ల డిలే అయ్యింది కానీ మిగతా అంతా ఎలాంటి ఇబ్బంది లేకుండానే షూటింగ్ చేశాం. సినిమా షూటింగ్ చివరలో ఉండగా కార్మికుల సమ్మె వచ్చింది. సినిమా చిత్రీకరణ తుది దశలో ఉంది కాబట్టి మాకు పెద్దగా ప్రాబ్లమ్ కాలేదు.

- సినిమా బిగినింగ్ లోనే హేషమ్ గారిని మ్యూజిక్ డైరెక్టర్ గా ఫిక్స్ చేసుకున్నాం. ఆయన మూవీకి మంచి మ్యూజిక్ ఇచ్చారు. నాలుగు సాంగ్స్, రెండు బిట్ సాంగ్స్ ఉంటాయి. ఇది వుమెన్ సెంట్రిక్ మూవీ కాదు. కాలేజ్ బ్యాక్ డ్రాప్ లో సాగే ప్రేమ కథ. సినిమా చూసిన ప్రేక్షకులంతా ఈ కథకు రిలేట్ అవుతారు. తమకు తెలిసిన వారి ప్రేమ కథలు వారికి గుర్తొస్తాయి.

- ఈ ప్రాజెక్ట్ సమంత గారితో చేయాలని అనుకోలేదు. ఈ స్క్రిప్ట్ కు రశ్మిక గారినే అనుకున్నాం. ఆమెకు ఈ స్క్రిప్ట్ పర్సనల్ గా చాలా నచ్చింది. అందుకే స్క్రిప్ట్ విషయంలో ఆమెతో ఎలాంటి డిస్కషన్స్ జరగలేదు. ఇప్పుడున్న పరిస్థితుల్లో ఒకటికి పదిసార్లు ఆలోచించి ప్రాజెక్ట్స్ టేకప్ చేస్తున్నాం. అరవింద్ గారు ఇచ్చే సలహా కూడా అదే.
