What happens when three legends of Indian cinema–Kamal Haasan, Mani Ratnam and AR Rahman–come together for a film? Sure they will conjure up some magic, right? Add the likes of editor Sreekar Prasas and cinematographer Ravi K Chandran into the mix, the result is a heart-stopping teaser of Thug Life, which dropped earlier today to mark the multi-hyphenate Kamal Haasan’s 70th birthday.
44 seconds in duration, the teaser opens with some rugged terrains and a helicopter shot before we see a slew of men firing at someone and killing him. We are later introduced to Kamal Haasan who seems to be a pro at martial arts, taking down his enemies swiftly. Then there’s Simbu who in one shot is celebrating Holi and in the next, emerges from a door like a wounded lion. While nothing of the plot is revealed, which is understandable as it’s still early days to kick off the film’s promotional campaign, the teaser ends with a money shot of Kamal sporting goggles with a clean-shaven look. Well, that one shot is enough for our anticipation to grow bigger around the film. We can’t keep calm.
From the atmospheric lighting to dynamic camerawork to jaw-dropping action sequences which will give you an adrenaline-rush, every frame of Thug Life is top-notch, promising an immersive experience. Rahman’s score is simply outstanding, enhancing the overall experience.
Thug Life marks the long-awaited reunion of Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam after a 36-year gap, following their successful 1987 collaboration Nayakan. The likes of Trisha Krishnan, Ashok Selvan, Nassar, Joju George, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Abhirami form the supporting roster. A joint production of Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Red Giant Movies, Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International, and Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies, the film opens in cinemas on June 5, 2025.
