The trailer of Kamal Haasan-fronted Thug Life is out and it would not be wrong to say it is an adrenaline-packed ride with the duo of Kamal and Mani Ratnam venturing into the realm of crime and action again, after first collaborating for Nayagan, which was in the same space, more than three decades ago.

Clocking in at two minutes, the trailer opens with Rangaraya Sakthiraj (played by Kamal) saying to a little kid that he has saved his life and that their fate is one. “From now on, we both are one until the end,” Rangaraya tells the boy. Now grown up, the boy Amar has the smarts of his father Rangaraya, who seems to be a gangster, and is in fact more ruthless than his father as he believes in aiming for the head of his opponents. There comes a point where Rangaraya assigns Amar outside things to handle, while he will look after the inside things but Amar is displeased with this proposal. So is a character played by the ever reliable Nasser who is upset with the elevation of Amar. There’s a subplot involving Rangaraya and Trisha and there is Joju George as well who is vying for power. Soon things spiral out of control and it’s an all out war between Rangaraya and his son. Who will end up triumphant? We’ll have to wait until June 5 to know the answer.

Summing up, the sharply-cut trailer, full of thrills, a touch of romance and edge-of-the-seat moments, promises a massy and fast-paced action entertainer. Crime, deceit and suspense are the defining moods of the trailer which also seems to have a twist towards the end. As it progresses, the tone gets more and more darker. The cinematography by Ravi K Chandran and background score by AR Rahman elevate the shots to another level, creating a visually stunning and intense atmosphere. Well, what can we talk about Kamal’s performance? He is being himself, while Silambarasan aka Simbu seems to have delivered his career best turn. Mani’s stamp is all over the trailer and after the gangster drama Nawab, he seems to have scaled things up further here.

Also featuring Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Abhirami, Mahesh Manjrekar and Ali Fazal, Thug Life is a joint production venture between Raaj Kamal Films International and Madras Talkies, with distributor-producer Sudhakar Reddy’s Sreshth Movies set to distribute it in the Telugu states.
