                            Story
Pinu Patel is a well-settled NRI in London. He owns an Indian restaurant called ‘Gaylord’, that does good business. His goes to India to look out for the right bride and that bride rejects him outright. Renu (Gul Panang) joins him as an accountant. Kamlesh (Anuj Chaudhary) joins him as a cook and a stand-up comedian. At one point of time, Kamlesh smooches Pinu on his lips. And Pinu thinks that he enjoyed it. He becomes homophobic and suspect if he were a straight guy or not. The rest of the story is all about the validation procedures Pinu goes through to prove that he is straight!
                           Actors:
Vinay Pathak slimmed down a lot. He is excellent. Gul Panand wore ethnic look in this film and she looks cool. But it is Anuj Chaudhary who steals the show as a cool guy with brimming positive attitude.
                           Technical departments:
Story: Story of the film is thin. The guy trying to bed a woman to test if he is straight reminds us a bit of ’40 year old Virgin’. There is no clarity in story progression in the film. It meanders. Screenplay of the film is just about okay. Direction by Parvati Balagopalan is partly good. There are good narration technique in the film with intercuts of Pinu Patel explaining the story (the complete scene comes in the climax). The way interval shot was shown during the opening title-cards is also good. But the script is weak and is full of loopholes.
Other technical departments: Cinematography is good. Music by Sagar Desai is nice. Editing is adequate. Dialogues are witty.
Analysis: First half shows good promise. Second half disappoints due to lack of focus. Straight is not a desi film at heart. It is more like a Hollywood romantic comedy. Though some of the scenes in the film are rib-tickling, there is no soul in the film and no depth in the content. I liked the narration technique adapted by the director. If you don’t care for the compactness and logics in a film, Straight might give you some occasional laughs.
