Tell us how Denikaina Ready materialise?
I was supposed to do some other project. BVS Ravi approached my father and narrated a script which has a bit of inspiration from a film. Dad loved the script and recommended it to me. I was continuously laughing as I listened to the script. I have okayed it. Gopi Mohan and Kona Venkat chipped in to develop this script. My first choice for this kind of script is always Seenu Vytla. Since he was too busy, we had zeroed on three directors and asked Seenu Vytla to recommend one. His instant choice was G Nageswara Reddy. After working with Nageswara Reddy, I have realized that he is only second to Seenu Vytla among the directors I worked with.
You are highlighting Dhee while promoting Denikaina Ready. Don’t you think you are raising expectations?
For the people who loved Dhee, I can confidently say that Denikaina Ready will entertain 10 times more. It’s a bold statement. I am also aware that people will stop believing me next time if my prediction becomes false. I have seen the final copy a couple of days back and I am completely confident about the entertainment it’s going to provide.
Vinny saw the film with friends few weeks back (without Rerecording). They were laughing throughout. I arranged a show to my close friends and relatives a couple of days back after getting the first copy. Manoj has hugged and kissed me in interval. He did that last time when he watched Dhee.
Tell us about your character in Denikaina Ready?
I am doing a character called Suleman whose father is a Muslim and mother is a Hindu. He follows both religions. It’s a fun entertainer that explores the mismatched identity. I know how difficult it is for a kid who parents are from different religions. I am a hardcore Hindu and my wife Vinny is a hardcore Christian. I am little concerned about how my twin daughters will perceive the dual-religion aspect when they grow up.
You are going for a highly aggressive release. What’s the reason?
The days of 50-day, 100-day films are over. If a film generates good talk, it collects 80% of total revenue in the first two weeks. I don’t want to miss out on that initials. If you look at my career, the number of prints are increasing with every film irrespective of the result. The satellite rates are growing for my each film. Audiences are willing to watch my movies. That’s why distributors are keen on having more number of prints and more number of screens.
Today I am not a superstar. Tomorrow I might be. People loved the trailer of Denikaina Ready. Trailer gave a sample bite of taste of the movie. We are releasing Telugu film in Karnataka and Malayalam version in Kerala with 160 screens. Denikaina Ready is going to be the first South Indian film to be released in 125 screens in North India. USA too will have a big star release. We were planning to release with 300 prints before Damarukam was postponed. Since, Damarukam was postponed, those exhibitors who didn’t entertain us came forward with advances and agreed to our terms. Now Denikaina Ready will have a 600-print release. We are going in full throttle and releasing Denikaina Ready in 800 to 900 theaters all over the world.
There seem to be some negativity around you among certain part of crowds. What could be the reason?
I take it positively. People throw stones only on trees that bear fruits. If I am not a threat, nobody would go to the extent of criticising me extremely. I feel that people should treat movie as movie and shouldn’t hate actors.
What about the negativity created for your father?
Nagarjuna once aptly described my father - Mohan Babu lo Ramudu vunnadu Ravanasurudu vunnadu. It depends on how we take it. My father stands up for what he thinks is right. The only negative thing people accuse of my father is that he is a kopisti.
You are known as a reclusive actor?
Basically my life revolves around movies and family. I don’t hangout with other people in film industry. Hence most of the people in film industry feel that I am proud and reclusive. My life revolves around 20 people. The only occasion I mingle with other celebrities is in the evening of every Saturday when I host a barbecue party at my penthouse. Lots of big stars and big directors come to that party unannounced and enjoy themselves.
You have over 2 lakhs of followers on twitter despite joining the bandwagon late?
I have joined twitter before going to Cannes film festival. I was not keen to join twitter, but an agency convinced me that it’s absolutely necessary to have twitter presence. In a way, twitter is helping me to directly get in touch with the movie lovers though certain media people seem to have been pissed off with it. Certain media houses keep hitting on me.
How different are you and Manoj?
We are quite opposite in many aspects. He is an extrovert and I am an introvert. I am a reserved person and he make friends in a jiffy. I have a cool head and Manoj is emotional. I think like a businessman and am unemotional about certain things. Manoj is very much attached to things he like.
Have you ever thought that you would become an actor?
It has been a fairy tale for me. I was the ugly duckling in my family. Acting was never meant for me. My dad wanted me to become an IPS officer. So it was either IPS or Engineering. But I had an inner craving to become an actor. I am fairly successful now. It’s like a dream. I am living a dream now. I don’t want to wake up. I am looking for an answer as what has God designed for me. I am trying to reciprocate in anyway I can to repay what God has created for me. I have adopted 25 kids during Rajolu floods. My dad educates 2500 kids every year. I am trying to be a good human being and be a socially responsible citizen. I am trying to figure out what God has designed for me.
What are your future projects?
Gopi Mohan narrated me an interesting story. I am also planning to a remake of dad’s blockbuster Assembly Rowdy.
When is Raavan to take off?
Pre-production of the film is going on now. This film will go to floors in the month of July 2013.
What about Manoj’s future projects?
He has signed three films. He will announce them officially soon.
