Rama (w/o SS Rajamouli) made her debut as costume designer with Sye film. She got very good appreciation for the costumes she designed for Prabhas in Chatrapati. Though officially known as costume designer, Rama is rumored to the backbone of production for SS Rajamouli’s films. Here is a small chitchat with Rama Rajamouli –
It is a custom in our film industry that wives/daughters of film stars and star directors taking up the job of costumes designers. Are you genuinely interested in costume designing?
Most of the girls are interested in cloths. As for as I am concerned I am genuinely interested in cloths right from the childhood. If I were given some money, my first priority is to spend it on cloths. I never thought that I would get into a profession like this. I became a costume designer by accident.
What is costume designing?
Each person is different in terms of physical appearance. Everything does not suit everybody. I try to give actors/actresses right color and the right style. Another advantage I have is that I am with Nandi (Rajamouli) since the script stage. I know what exactly is in his mind. I understand the characterization better. Hence costume designing comes easy to me. The two things I consider while designing costumes is physical appearance of the actor and director’s vision about the character.
As a costume designer I should also have good interaction with the cinematographer and art director. Costume designer and art director work together. Once set design is finalized for a song, we discuss the colors of the costumes.
Most of the producers worked with Rajamouli say that Rama handles production of their films. How far is it true?
I am very close to everybody in the team and I keep organizing everything. But I do not involve in production issues.
There are comments in women circle that violence factor is more in Rajamouli’s films. What is your take on that?
Since I am involved in making of his films from script level, I am not in a position to complain about violence after watching the final product. It looks pretty normal to me. But many of my cousins complain about the violence factor.
Is Rajamouli such a violent person in real life too?
He is a very soft person by nature. I think I am more violent than him.
Why do you think Rajamouli films have more violence?
He might be fascinated towards violence because he does not possess it at personal level. He is fascinated by heroism and violence that is not prevalent in a common man.
Which of the Rajamouli’s films you like the most?
Sye is my most favorite film among his films.
Which film you did not like that much?
Student No.1
Who do you think has the best personality among the Telugu heroes from the costume designer’s perspective?
My intention is to show heroes in better way compared to their earlier films.
That is a pretty good diplomatic answer. What about heroines?
Shriya has a perfect and a very proportionate body. She fits excellently into any type of costume.
Have you seen Vikramarkudu? What is your gut feeling about it?
I have not seen the entire film. But I saw vital episodes of the film after rerecording. They are pretty nice.
What are your future plans?
We have registered a banner ‘Viswamitra Creations’ and our next film would be produced on that banner. I will be the producer of that film.
When will that film start?
Rajamouli wants to take rest for six months after Vikramarkudu. He is planning for one summer release every year. So my director has to give me go ahead!
