Story
Veerayya (Chiranjeevi) is a fisherman who helps people around. Solomon escapes from the police custody and the honest CI (Rajendra Prasad) is fired. CI comes to know that Solomon is in Kuala Lumpur. He hires Veerayya to extract Solomon from Malaysia. Veerayya goes to Kuala Lumpur and tracks the movement of drug kingpin. That’s when it is revealed that there is more to Veerayya and the story. Rest of the story is about the personal connection to Veerayya and how he takes revenge.

Artists Performance

Chiranjeevi: Chiranjeevi is in his element in this film. He seems to have completely enjoyed playing the character. Last few films (Sye Raa (no dances, no comedy, no entertainment), Acharya (passive character with no emotion and no entertainment), Godfather (serious character with no comedy and no heroine)) have made audiences crave for Chiranjeevi films with entertainment, mass, masala and dances. And Waltair Veerayya catered to all the needs audiences are asking for. Chiranjeevi has also lowered himself in some scenes involving Ravi Teja as per the character demand and it worked. There are a few brother senti scenes (Chiru cleaning mud on Ravi Teja poster) which worked well. Chiranjeevi singing an impromptu Jaarumithaya twice in the 2nd half is hilarious. Truly vintage Chiranjeevi is back with this film.

Others: It’s gracious of Ravi Teja who is in top form to accept a limited, yet vital role. This role is the life of the movie. Ravi Teja has done it out of affection for Chiranjeevi. The chemistry between these two characters is superb. Ravi Teja is perfect. However, his Telangana accent should have been better (as his strength lies in his natural dialogue delivery with a bit of fun/satire in it). Shruti Haasan too plays an important character and she is very good. Prakash Raj plays a baddie and nice to see him in a big villain role after a gap. Bobby Simha is good. Catherine Tresa is fine in a character role. Satyaraj is seen in a limited, fun role. Vennela Kishore, Sreenivasara Reddy, Pradeep Rawat, Saptagiri, Shakalaka Shankar and others are fine.

Story - screenplay - direction: It’s a brother sentiment film. The story looks patchy at times and doesn’t have completeness to it. Kona Venkat has his own style of mafia/comedy writing. It’s evident in this film too. The mafia element is beaten-to-death long back hence it's not exciting at all. However, comedy worked. Adding Ravi Teja character to the story worked well. It added balance to the second half. Director Bobby Kolli definitely knows what works for Chiranjeevi. He has created vintage moments from past films of megastar like JVAS, Gang leader, Rowdy Alludu, Gharana Mogudu, Muthamestri etc. Entertainment and sentiment worked in the movie. The interval episode will elevate the tempo of the film and it continues till the pre climax. However, handling of climax is routine and an unconventional (questionable) end.

Other departments: Best thing about the movie is the music by Devi Sri Prasad. First song ‘Boss Party’ is the best. Poonakalu Loading that features both heroes is a treat to watch. Sridevi song is also nice. Title song that comes during the interval episode elevates the emotion in it with thumping music. Background score is also very good. Cinematography by ArthurA Wilson is good. Dialogues are entertaining. Art direction by AS Prakash is very good (especially Boss Party set). Action sequences composed by Ram Laxman are good, though a couple of scenes are ghastly. Editing by Niranjan Devaramane is fine. Production values by Mythri Movie Makers are grand though the unit didn’t go to shoot in Malaysia (entire Malaysia scenes were managed using green mat graphics and westin hotel).

Analysis: Chiranjeevi’s trueblue fan Bobby Kolli recreates vintage Chiranjeevi and delivers a reasonable commercial film. Plus points are Chiranjeevi, Ravi Teja, DSP music, entertainment and dances. On the flipside, the story is patchy and the screenplay is intermittent. Waltair Veerayya is going to be a pure joy for Chiranjeevi fans and would be a reasonable entertainer for the common public. It’s worth giving a try for this Sankranthi festival!
