Story
Dharma (Sai Kumar) is the owner of a marriage function hall called SR Kalyanamandapam. Being a pampered son of a successful business owner, Dharma ends up selling most of assets and gets addicted to alcohol. Kalyan (Kiran Abbavarapu) is the son of Dharma. Though he is bad with studies, he is sincere and responsible when it comes to his family. With the help of his friends and with encouragement from his mother (Tulasi), Kalyan takes up the challenge of reviving the marriage function hall. He loves his classmate Sindhu (Priyanka Jawalkar). Rest of the story is about how he comes to terms with his irresponsible father, how he makes the function hall a success and how he ends up marrying his love.
Artists Performance
Kiran Abbavarapu who has played more of a subdued character in his debut Raja Vaaru Rani Gaaru choses a more of a dynamic and energetic character in this film. He has done really well in energetic scenes as well as emotional scenes. His dialogue delivery is good with the Rayalaseema dialect. There is not much to do for the heroine Priyanka Jawalkar in this movie. Sai Kumar is given an author-backed role of an irresponsible yet innocent father whose only work is to blow the money away. He has done it exceptionally well. You can see subtle comedy as well as unbearable pain in his emotions. The three guys who have done the characters of the hero's friends have done well. Kiran seems to have the knack of getting a good set of friends in his movies.
Technical departments
Story - screenplay - direction: The story of the film is provided by the hero Kiran. It has got three threads (father-son, revival of business & love track). The emotions between father and son are carried well. However, we sometimes fail to understand why the father character behaves like that though there is an explanation in the end terming his behavior as innocent. Revival of the business part of the film is good. The love thread of the film is uninteresting with the hero focussing and yapping more about her midriff than actually being emotional about her. First half of the film is decent with the interval block setting up a perfect stage. However, things get fizzled out in the second half with the love aspect becoming routine. The director has done good in emotional scenes, but failed to give a gripping narrative in the second half. Screenplay in the second half lacks the sting.
Other departments: Music by Chaitan Bharadwaj is good with a couple of songs (Choosale Kallara and Chukkala Chunni) standing out. Cinematography by Viswas Danial is fine. DI (colour grading) should have been better. Editing by Sridhar Gade is alright. Dialogues by Kiran Abbavaram are good with a bit of Rayalaseema slang. Production values by Pramod and Raju (Elite Entertainments) are decent.
Analysis: SR Kalyanamandam is majorly about the relationship between a father and son. An irresponsible father and a responsible son. Kiran Abbavaram is slowly turning to be an actor to watch out for with variety in his script selection and his varied performances. Plus points of the film are father-son duo and music. On the flipside, the second half should have been more engaging. The likability of this film is based on how one understands the character of Sai Kumar. If you find it innocent like the son, you may like it. If you find the character to be stupid, you end up disliking the film. This film has generated good pre release buzz due to songs which resulted in encouraging openings. We need to wait and see how it works at the box office!
