Review

Story
Afreen (Rashmika Mandanna) is a patriotic Pakistani student who pursues studies in London. She is forcibly given an assignment by her deceased grandfather (a top army official) to deliver a letter (written 20 years back) to Sita in India. It was written by Ram. Afreen reluctantly reaches India to find out and deliver. She meets people in the process and gets an account of Sita and Ram. She then tries to assemble and get to know the love story. Rest of the story is how she delivers the letter.

Artists Performance

Dulquer Salmaan fits the role perfectly and delivers dialogues himself. He slips into the character effortlessly and makes us empathize with him. Mrunal Thakur is beautiful and fits the character description well. Rashmika Mandanna plays a daring role of a hijab-clad Pakistani patriot who is reluctantly sent to India. Tharun Bhaskar plays the role of her helping friend (no romantics here). It’s also a brave decision for Sumanth to play a character role for the first time in his career. He is good. Prakashraj is effective in a brief role. Vennela Kishore has a different character in the film. Vyjayanthi Movies has pulled all the resources to cast popular faces for all characters in this movie (like Priyadarshi for a still photographer role).

Technical departments

Story - screenplay - direction: The basic story of the film is about taking a letter from the sender to the receiver after a gap of 20 years. We get to know about Sita and Ram characters through various accounts of other characters in the film. The screenplay technique is a little similar to that of Vijay D - Samantha in Mahanati film. However, there are a couple of genuine twists in the film which makes the story more interesting. Director Hanu Raghavapudi whose strength has always been aesthetic story-telling seems to have been given a free hand to go all out. Hanu Raghavapudi’s earlier films did have strong first halves and faltered second halves. This time he had made sure that there is enough meat towards climax in the second half. In fact, the final portion of the film ties all the loose ends to give a round picture. However, being a screenplay-based one, this film should have a relatively short runtime.

Other departments: Visuals and sound in the film are very pleasing. The primary credit goes to the cinematographer PS Vinodh and music director Vishal Chandrasekhar. The best thing about the film are aesthetics in terms of production design (art direction) and costumes. The mix sixties period comes alive as the love story between Sita and Ram unfolds. The props used in the film are exhiquite (be it a red umbrella or stacked glass decanters during the scene where the hero takes a photo of the heroine). The costumes (designed by Sheetal Sharma), the ones used for the heroine, have retro vibes to them. Dialogues written by Hanu Raghavapudi, Jay Krishna and Raj Kumar Kandamudi are pristine and true to the period. Editing by Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao is fine. Production values by Vyjayanthi Movies banner are extraordinary.

Analysis: Sita Ramam uses poetic style of storytelling. Hence the director took a lot of time to establish the characters in the first half. Narration is sluggish, but intermittent introduction of characters and twists keep the engagement factor alive. Hanu Raghavapudi’s trademark aesthetic telling and producer Swapna’s class is evident in each frame of the film. Personally, I would prefer the narration to be a little faster so that it appeals more to an average moviegoer. On the whole, Sita Ramam is a classy tale of eternal love.
