Review

Story
Dr. Karthikeya visits Dwaraka (birthplace of Lord Krishna) as he accompanies his mother to the pilgrimage. Rao, an idealistic professor belonging to a secret society gets killed and Karthikeya is implicated in that murder. He is joined by Mugdha (Anupama Parameswaran) - the granddaughter of Rao. Both of them realize that Rao is dead because he is a couple of steps away from finding something which belongs to Lord Srikrishna. Rest of the story is all about how a reluctant Karthikeya takes up the mission and completes it.

Artists Performance

Nikhil is excellent as Karthikeya. His characterisation is good. He has made sure that he looks believable though there are fights in the film. Anupama Parameswaran plays a role that travels along with the hero. She is very good. Srinivasa Reddy and Harsha Chemudu entertain in their own ways. Anupam Kher plays the role of a professor who changes the thinking process of the hero with his insights. KS Sridhar is apt as the noble professor. Aditya Menon is good as a baddie. Satya and Praveen have limited roles. Tulasi is good as the hero's mother.

Technical departments

Story - screenplay - direction: Director Chandoo Mondeti has always succeeded when he chooses content-driven films (Karthikeya & Premam). For Karthikeya 2 too he has followed the script and didn’t deviate from the core point. He established the first scene involving the hero well and used the same aspect to get a commercial pay-off during the climax of the film. He has also made sure that the heroine in this film is just another character with the same goal and avoided a romantic angle between them (saved at least 15-20 minutes and some boredom). He has also done a lot of research about hindu culture and traditions and used that information well to create interest as the story progresses. He tried to give scientific explanations whenever it's needed (example - telling the minimum speed a vehicle should travel on a frozen river) to create curiosity/tension. The aspect of secret societies and a powerful object belonging to Lord Krishna hidden somewhere, resembles the film ‘The Da Vinci Code’. The director has given Indiana Jones kinds of treatment to the primary characters. However, the charm we get to see in Hollywood adventurous thrillers is missing in the film (as this film tries to apply Hindu mythology to Hollywood style of story). The narration has some slack moments in the first half till the interval point is set up. Screenplay is decent.

Other departments: Background music by Kala Bhairava is good. Cinematography by Karthik Ghattamneni is very good. The graphic illustrations about mythology (Lord Krishna and Uddhava) should have been better. Dialogues in the film are excellent. A lot of insight is thrown into Indian mythology. Production design is very good. Locations are excellent. Action sequences are neat. Editing is okay. Production values are good.

Analysis: Karthikeya 2 is made on the premise that what if the mythology is a real history. It’s like retrieving a valuable thing left by Lord Krishna thousands of years later as two groups of assassins are on your back. It’s like a desi adaptation of Hollywood adventure/mystic thrillers (Indiana Jones & Da Vinci Code). Director Chandoo Mondeti mostly succeeds in getting the script right and executing it to satisfaction. There are a few liberties taken by the director. Certain parts in the first half are not so engaging. These factors don't take away anything from what the film offers. On a whole, Karthikeya 2 is a decent adventurous mystic thriller that works. You may watch it.
