Review

Story
Suri (Sudheer Babu) is an electrician in a town. Sridevi (Anandhi) helps in running her father’s (Naresh) Soda center. Kasi (Pavel Navageethan) is the landlord and he doesn’t like Suri because he is not subservient like other people in the town. Suri and Sridevi fall in love and her father does not accept because of the caste difference. Kasi gets involved in the whole thing and makes it difficult for Suri. Rest of the story is all about how he fights for his love.

Artists Performance

Sudheer Babu has worked really hard on his looks and acting in this film. He developed a chiseled body for a couple of fight scenes in the film. He is excellent with histrionics in the climax episode. Anandhi looks pretty and acts with superb ease. Pavel Navageethan is very apt for the role of a cunning and cruel landlord. He is menacing because of his devious mind, not because of his masculinity (looks like a normal man). That’s why we see him attacking the hero from the backside and using cunning methods in the 1-1 fight in the climax because he is physically weak. Naresh gets an author-backed role and he is excellent. Satyam Rajesh and Raghu Babu are very good. Ajay looks menacing as a prisoner. Saptagiri did a single scene cameo in his inimitable style. All other actors are aptly cast.

Technical departments

Story - screenplay - direction: The basic story point of the film is very good. It’s about a love story and the caste divide (upper and lower) between them. Director Karuna Kumar who has shown promise with his debut film has chosen another subject whose core point is again a caste divide. He handled the pre-climax and climax part of the film in a powerful way. However, he falters in narrating the love story in a convincing way. The mid-part of the film looks more like Teja’s youth films (romance and elope). All characters in the film are well-written. But he has added commercial ingredients for the hero’s character. Narration of the story is slow. Screenplay is good in the final scenes of the film.

Other departments: Cinematography by Shamdat is impressive. He has captured the boat sequences beautifully and created realistic visuals for story-based/emotional scenes. Background music by Mani Sharma is excellent. He has used instruments which are not usually used for BGM in Telugu films. Dialogues like Peddamanishi ante mudda pettevaadu, mudda laakkune vaadu kaadun are pretty good. Dialogues written for the climax make an impact. Fights are composed well. Art direction by Rama Krishna and Mounika is authentic. Editing is alright. Action sequences are well-choreographed. Production values by 70mm Entertainments banner are grand.

Analysis: Sridevi Soda Center is about caste divide. Director Karuna Kumar excelled in getting the emotion and message right in scenes leading to climax. However, the base love story which is the foundation to it is not fresh enough. This film is a mixed bag for me. The love story would have worked if they cast teengers in this kind of film. However, Sudheer Babu justified it all with a terrific performance in the climax. If you are in for a realistic and honest cinema, this film is worth a watch for a powerful and moving climax.
