After Prabhudeva, Lawrence and Amma Rajasekhar, we have another promising choreographer making his debut as film director. Vidya who worked for over 60 films in Telugu as a choreographer has directed a thriller called ‘Myaav’. This film is due for the release on 5 December. Here is an exclusive interview with Vidya -
Background:
I am born and brought up in Vijayawada. I completed my graduation from Osmania University, Hyderabad. I had always interested in dancing since childhood. Prabhudeva is my inspiration. I wanted to become a choreographer. After coming to film industry, I realized that it is not an easy job to become a choreographer overnight. I joined as a group dancer for Swapna Lokam film in 1997. Then I became an assistant to the choreographer Krishna Reddy. I started my career as an independent choreographer in 2001 with Priyadarshini film. I worked for over 65 films as a choreographer so far. A few prominent films I worked for include Satyam, Pandem, Pellaina Kothalo, Samanyudu, Maisamma, Gunde Jhallumandi etc. I also acted in negative character of Rajesh in Madan’s film Gunde Jhallumandi.
What inspired you to become a director?
I had the opportunity to interact with various directors while working as a choreographer. And half of the songs I composed were situational songs. The choreographer should know about story and the scenes to compose movements for a situational song. My involvement with various good directors got me interested in the field of direction. Then I started preparing subjects.
What is your directorial debut Myaav about?
All of us do mistakes. Most of us realize our mistakes and don’t do them again. Some people continue doing mistakes. This film is about such people. The entire film is shot in Bangkok and it is woven around six youthful software engineers (four guys and two girls) working over there. It is a thriller. Myaav is a screenplay based film.
Why did you use masks on actors?
We did not want to reveal the faces of actors and create a curiosity value among the audiences. That is why all the poster designs have masks on the faces of actors.
How many songs are there?
There is only one song, that’s too is a situational song.
Being a choreographer turned director, why didn’t do you love story?
I loved the story of this film given by a friend.
What can movie lovers expect from Myaav?
It is an entertainment based movie. It has got a feel and mood to it. This film is not made with the purpose of scaring audiences. It will connect with the audiences emotionally.
What is the single lens concept that is unique to this film?
Each and every film camera has 5 or more lenses with various specifications like 100mm, 75mm, 40mm, 50mm and zoom etc. The cinematographer uses all these lenses in a film depending on the shot and framing. Our cinematographer Surender Reddy came up with the idea of using single lens (75mm) for the entire film. The entire movie is told from one point of view and it would be reflected well if we shot it with a single lens. Incidentally Myaav is the first Indian feature film that is being shot using single lens. The only other film that was shot using single lens in the entire world was Akira Kurosawa’s ‘Ran (1985)’. He used tele lens for it.
Tell us about the production?
This film is being produced on Eka Rudra Devi Films banner by Chennupati Naga Malliswari. She arranged some capital amount. And we picked up chief technicians and cast by telling that they have to work for free and in turn they would become shareholders in the project. Being shareholders, everybody owned the project and gave their best.
What is the duration of the film and how are you going to promote it?
The runtime of the film is 1.55 hrs. We prepared 52 theatrical trailers and sent them to major centers in AP. The film will be released with over 20 prints on 5th December. We are going for censoring on 26 November. Myaav is a different film that would not disappoint anybody.
What is your next project?
I have not yet decided about the next project. I will continue doing choreography though I may direct more films. I am also interested in acting if I get prominent roles like the one I did in Gunde Jhallumandi.
