Artists Performance
Most of the actors are either first timers and less utilized ones. They add freshness to the film. Ram Nithin is fine as an introvert. Ram Nithin is decent as a chocolate boy. Sangeeth Sobhan steals the show because of his characterization and performance. Vishnu Oi who did the role of Laddu is hilarious with his performance and dialogue delivery. Ananthika Sanilkumar is good. Gouripriya is fine. Gopikaa Udyan is decent. Raghu Babu is very entertaining whenever he appears. Muralidhar Goud who shot to fame in DJ Tillu does another worried father role in this film. He is pretty good. Racha Ravi, Anthony and Srikanth Reddy are fine.
Story - screenplay - direction: Story of the film is wafer-thin. This film is about entertaining moments and a slice of engineering college life. Debutant director Kalyan Shankar does a nice job of introducing the characters in an interesting way and setting up the conflict point by the interval. Second half has got quite a few entertaining moments. The director has focussed completely on the entertainment factor and didn’t dwell much into love stories. He has succeeded in keeping the audiences engaged throughout. You can see quite a few inspirations like 3 Idiots, Jathi Rathnalu etc.
Other departments: Major plus point of this film are dialogues which are contemporary and funny. Background music by Bheems Ceciroleo is very good. Songs are okay. The placement and picturisation of songs also doesn't add value. Cinematography by Shamdat - Dinesh Krishnan B is very good. Production design by Raam Arasavilli is good. Editing is fine. Production values of the film are decent.
Analysis: It’s been a while since we saw an entertaining campus film in Telugu. Hence this movie offers a freshness not just with its theme, but also due to new actors and new director. MAD is a college comedy that deals primarily with the lives of 4 college students. This film is a result of what happens when you make ‘Happy Days’ (a vibrant college film with honest story telling) kind of film with Jathi Rathnalu (nonsensical yet enjoyable comedy) kind of treatment. MAD is not as good as either of the above mentioned films. But it has an ample entertainment factor. This film definitely works well with the target audiences. Others too may watch it!
