MS Raju who gave Sankranthi hits like Okkadu, Vaana and NVNV in the past had a lean patch with Pournami and Vaana in the recent times. MS Raju is coming again with a film titled Maska with Ram and Hansika in the main leads. Maska is going to release worldwide with 275 – 300 prints. Here are the excerpts of chitchat -
What is the meaning of Maska?
Maska means praising people in order to get some benefits out of them. I feel that ‘maska’ is needed to succeed in life. Maska has become a part of our lives. I feel that those people who say Namaskaram is trying to put some maska to you as there is maska in Na’maska’ram.
Tell us about Maska?
Satruvu, Devi and Manasantha Nuvve films came when my career was in slump. Likewise Maska is also releasing when I am having a lean patch. Films like Sankarabharanam, Nuvve Kavali and Okkadu are trendsetters in Telugu film industry as lots of films were made on those lines later. Maska will also create a new trend and genre in Telugu film industry. It is an out and out commercial entertainer with no experiments. I took my own time in post-production of the film. I was ready to release on 9 January. There will be loads of entertainment in the film with a simple message.
Tell us about Ram and heroines?
Ram’s energy is the highlight of Maska. He has done a terrific work. His dances in this film are going to amazing. Ram is a sincere actor and a hard worker. He will be the future superstar.
Hansika is extremely glamorous in the film. Sheila did an author-backed role which requires good acting.
Is Maska going to be a milestone for Ram?
Manasantha Nuvve, Okkadu, Varsham and NVNV have been milestones in the careers of Uday Kiran, Mahesh Babu, Prabhas and Siddhardh. Likewise, Maska will be a milestone in the career of Ram.
What prompted you to choose B Gopal as the director?
Just the way I picked up Guna Sekhar and VN Aditya for my earlier projects, I preferred B Gopal for this film. He is an experienced and proven director. he gave a strong support to me. I am a hot-tempered man and he is a cool director. He gave me lot of cushion the location. B Gopal proves with Maska that a mass director like him can do an youth film.
Any other important character in the film?
Sunil has always been a member of Sumanth Arts core team. Sunil has done one of his finest characters in the recent times. He adjusted his dates for this film. He gives valuable suggestions to me. There are scenes of 400-feet length which needed good punches and great timing. Ram and Sunil performed it with finesse.
Tell us about the music?
Chakri worked for Sumanth Arts banner for the first time. He could not give a tune that excited us for three months. I was expecting great tunes from him. He took it as a challenge and came up with great songs.
I called the lyricist Kandikonda to pen one lyric in the film. I liked his lyrics so much that I made him writing all lyrics in the film.
Why are you distributing Maska on your own?
I was in a bad shape at the time of Manasantha Nuvve. Uday Kiran had a huge hit Nuvvu Nenu. Because of Nuvvu Nenu, I got lots of big offers. I could make a couple of crores as table profit if I sold it. I had shown the film to D Suresh Babu. He suggested that I should not sell the film and release it on my own. And Manasantha Nuvve made lots of profits.
Last few films of mine did not do well at box office and I am in a bad shape now. Ram is raving to go with the huge hit of Ready. I am getting crazy offers for Maska film. I have shown the film to Suresh Babu again. He suggested that I should not sell it to anybody. He said that Maska will generate great collections.
Paruchuri Gopala Krishna said that you spend 4-5 crores more that what is required?
If you see Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana, it would have worked even if I shoot in a house in Ramachandrapuram. But I constructed a house set in Araku for the second half. I modified the interiors and gave the imperial look to the house set in Nanakram Guda. It helped enhancing the visual splendor of the film. Likewise, for Maska film too I did not compromise on any aspect to give it a grand look.
You don’t have big films to compete with for this Sankranthi?
Big or small, I want all the films to do well. But I am a little selfish. Hence I expect my film to fare better than others.
How many prints you are releasing the film with?
I am going to release the film with 275 to 300 prints. In Nizam itself I am going to put 90 prints. For Krishna, we are releasing with 18 prints (6 prints for Okkadu). For Vizag we are releasing with 30 prints (12 prints for Okkadu). In Nellore, we are putting 10 prints. I hope this film to create records in the first week.
