The rocking music director trio Shankar – Ehsaan – Loy are in Hyderabad to attend the music launch of their debut Telugu music album Konchem Istam Konchem Kastam (KIKK). Here is chitchat with Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy -
What is the reason for accepting to score for KIKK?
The story is beautiful. We could see lots of passion and drive in Bujji and Dolly when they approached us. That is the reason for accepting KIKK project.
Tell us about your experience about scoring music for a Telugu film for the first time?
It was a challenging task to us. This album should not sound like a Hindi album. At the same time, it should be different from regular Telugu albums. We tried to create balance.
Is Telugu language a barrier for you to create music?
We feel that music has no language. We worked for many commercials and jingles for South India. Music is nothing but notes. And notes convey emotions. Lyricists add words to the notes to bring out more emotions.
How can three guys work as music director trio?
Three stumps are needed to play cricket. Even if there is music director he has to work with a set of musicians to create music. Music composition has always been a team work. To start with vocals is Shankar’s strength. Ehsaan is a guitarist. Loy plays piano. But over a period of time, we have gone beyond our individual strengths to work as a team.
What is your opinion on remixes? Are you open to idea of remixes?
Remix music is good if it’s done well. Remix music is good for parties as remix songs have lots of energy in them. Celine Dion remixed her own Titanic tune and it is a huge success. It proved that a remix can be done aesthetically. With the advent of computers, any amateur can do a remix. The bad trend that is going on in India is that cheap and vulgar videos are being made to promote remix albums. I feel that a good remix song should have a decently shot remix video.
You sung for almost all music directors in South India. Did any music director influence you?
We see to that we are not influenced by anybody. We learned a lot from Ilayaraja, AR Rehman and Mani Sharma and Devi Sri Prasad in south. But we maintain our unique style and signature to our music.
You used to sing a lot in Telugu films earlier. Now we don’t find you singing in Telugu much?
I used to travel and come to Hyderabad and Chennai to sing earlier. After becoming busy as music director in Bollywood, I request the music director to come to Mumbai to record my songs. That is why you see less number of songs in Telugu now. But everyday morning, I end up singing a song for a South Indian film in Mumbai.
What is your best song in Telugu?
The breathless song in sung in Sri Manjunadha.
What is your observation on Telugu language?
Telugu language has melody to it. It has beautiful percussion. Telugu comes from Devanagari script. I understand Devanagari script. If a Telugu song is written in Devanagari script, I can render that song with perfect Telugu pronunciation. It is not possible in Tamil language.
What do you think are essential for composing music for a song?
I feel that lyrics, composition, singer and arrangement are four pillars of any song.
SP Balu said that if he had sung songs for Sri Ramadasu instead of you, the songs would have been much better. What is your reaction to it?
SP Balu is a God for me. I completely agree with him. I thank MM Keeravani for giving me the opportunity.
From Dil Chahta Hain to Rock On, you had been giving music for young films. What is your comment?
We feel good about it. Youth is the future of India. Our music is catered towards youth. Though we give young music, we make sure that there is Indianness in it. It you listen to Tare Zameen Par music, you will find that we are capable of giving soulful melodies too.
