Rajshri Media Pvt Limited (an associate company of legendry banner Rajshri Films) came up with a unique business model for online movies where the net surfers will get to watch the entire movie for free where as the producers who give non-exclusive streaming rights will get 50% of ad revenues obtained from free streaming. Rajjat A Barjatya (grandson of Barjatya) came up with this idea and started streaming free movies in Rajshri.com and now he is diversifying into regional languages Telugu, Tamil, Maathi and Bengali. He tied up with Suresh Productions and Prasad films. Here is idlebrain.com exclusive chitchat with the managing director Rajjat A Barjatya

Tell us about how Rajshri.com started?
In the old days, there used to be revenue from only theatrical release. With the advent of internet, I am proud to say that Rajshri is the only production house in India where it has presence in five forms media – theatres, TV, mobile phones, internet and IPod. We started Rajshri.com in November 2008. Our film Vivaah was simultaneously kept in this website on pay per view model. We charged around 10 dollars for a viewing of the movie. The users could see it in 72 hours from the purchase of service. Around 6,500 people saw Vivaah online by paying $10 each. After that we kept it for free viewing and around 50 thousand people watched it for free so far.

Which technology are you using to stream videos?
We convert the videos to flash format (flv files) and stream it through secure connection. The viewers cannot download/rip the videos. We tied up with Limelight Network to stream the content all over the world seamlessly.

How does the revenue model work for you?
We source content for free from the filmmakers and we insert video ad of 30 seconds for every 8 minutes while streaming the movie. And we generate revenue through advertisements and part half of the revenue with the respective filmmaker. The entire procedure is transparent and logs will be generated and given to the producers for their references.

Film enthusiasts keep parts of movies on youtube illegally. Are you going to take any action?
We act on behalf of the content owners and make sure that illegal content is removed. We have an agreement with youtube, amazon and itunes regarding the same.

How many pageviews do you generate a day?
We have around 1 million registered users and majority of the users are from USA following by UK and India. We generate around 1 million page views a day. We have a collection of 5000 movies. We took the rights of 1000 Telugu movies and we uploaded 50 Telugu films so far.

Which are you languages you are offering free films in?
Hindi (Rajshri.com), Telugu (Rajshritelugu.com), Tamil (Rajshritamil.com), Marathi (Rajshrimarathi.com) and Bengali (Rajshribengali.com).
