Story
Janardhan (Tanikella Bharani) is a rich financier in Hyderabad and he has two kids Vijay (Srinivas Avasarala) and Deepika (Eesha Rebba). Deepika is in love with Ananth (Sesh Adivi), who is of middle class background. Vijay falls in love with Maya (Aditi Myakal). Janardhan wants to marry off Deepika to Sri Chilipi (Vennela Kishore) who is son of a billionaire from Vizag. The Chilipi vamsam has a tradition of not looking at bride till they get married. Rest of the story is all about how Deepika plays this strange tradition of Chilipi to her advantage.
Artists Performance
Actors: Sesh Adivi’s diction is more stable now and he plays his part with panache. Srinivas Avasarala Is very natural and he is hilarious in a song in which he mimics Kamal Haasan for Suvvi Suvvi song. He has modified his dialect and spoken with Telangana accent. Vennela Kishore gets a funny role which has huge screen time and he comes up a superb performance. It’s a kind of a tailor made role for Brahmanandam. Since it’s a 30 year old character, Vennela Kishore has fit in the role perfectly. Though he has his own indomitable style of comedy, he has also imitated Brahmanandam’s body language in few scenes. Eesha Rebba has a pivotal role and she shows fun side of her with chirpy attitude and an authentic Telangana dialect. Aditi Myakal is spontaneous with her acting. It’s a cakewalk for Tanikella Bharani. Shyaamala is good as maid who makes Vennela Kishore life hell. Tanikella Bhargav is promising as an assistant to Vennela Kishore. Ananth is entertaining as purohitudu.
.Technical departments
Story - screenplay - direction: The story of this film is inspired by an English play written by an Irish playwright Richard Sheridan. Ami Thumi has got limited characters and limited locations since it’s adapted by a play. It’s a plain and simple comedy which works on the concept of miscommunication. Writing for a comedy of this type could have been more challenging if cell phones are used by main characters in key scenes. Hence the director has cleverly/conveniently made sure that either phones are switched off or lost by lead actors in the film so that screenplay becomes simple. Mohana Krishna introduces each character and sets up the plot well by the interval. Post-interval, the narration becomes placid mainly due to lack high points. The characters of Adivi Sesh and Srinivas Avasarala go missing for a significant part. Vennela Kishore’s character becomes the player (gets played) in the second half. Mohan Krishna Indraganti has made an simple film with an uncluttered screenplay. I expect the screenplay to be a little complicated for a film of this type to be more interesting. One should appreciate Mohan Krishna Indraganti for serving us a clean (vegetarian) film though there are many opportunities in the story to add masala so that it could reach wider audiences.
Other departments: Mani Sharma proves yet again why he is the master of background music and rerecording. He gives a fitting bgm for a screwball comedy like Ami Thumi. There are three songs during the film and one song during the end titles. Cinematography by PG Vinda is neat and sets the mood up. Mohaka Krishna Indragranti’s one liners are very good. His satires like ‘AR Rahman Telugu song lyrics ardhamaina vaadila’ and hilarious usage of Toshiro Mifune (hero of most of Akira Kurosawa’s movies) name are good. Editing is nice and the runtime is 2:05 hours. Production values by the new producer are adequate.
Analysis: Ami Thumi has certain uniqueness about it. Major stakeholders of the film (Mohan Krishna Indraganti, Vennela Kishore, Srinivas Avasarala & Adivi Sesh) are returned from USA. Four of the lead actors (Tanikella Bharani, Vennela Kishore, Srinivas Avasarala & Adivi Sesh) are directors themselves. Hence, you can observe the genre to be different and you can notice actors’ conviction in such a clean film. Plus points of the film are actors and clean comedy. But, narration is flat. Story is highly predictable because it’s simple. The screenplay lacks any high points. On a whole, Ami Thumi is vegetarian comedy that appeals to a limited set of audiences. |
