Story
Niranjan (Adith) is a hacker and he is planning to sell valuable data to a few buyers on darknet. A set of people are chasing Niranjan for the same data. Sekhar (Rajasekhar) is an assistant commissioner in NIA (National Investigation Agency). He accidentally fumbles on Niranjan and the people who is chasing him. Rest of the story is all about how he cracks it and makes sure that the culprits are brought to justice.
Artists Performance
Rajasekhar: Rajasekhar’s strength has always been playing the role of cop role and his image always was built as angry man right from the days of Ankusam. He plays the role of an assistant commissioner in this film. He looks realistic in simple attire and acts naturally without going overboard. At the same time, he makes high octane action sequences look believable because he portrayed it. This film is his comeback film due to two factors - 1. His image of angry cop is intact in this film. 2. His characterization in this film is subtle and in tune with the changing mindset of Telugu film viewers.
Others: Adith who acted as hero in films like Katha and Tungabhadra does a vital character and he does it with poise and great comfort. Pooja Kumar plays the role of a nagging wife that generates some humor. Shraddha Das does the role of a TV reporter and she has limited screen space. Nassar is good as a compassionate boss of Rajasekhar. Kannada Kishore is impressive though he gets a limited screen time. Ravi Varma plays the role of Rajasekhar’s assistant and he is very good. Shatru is good with screen presence. Adarsh Balakrishna, though acted in an action episode leaves his mark with stylized look of a killer. Sunny Leone sizzled in an item song. Posani Krishna Murali, Ali, Pruthvi and Sayaji Shinde are satisfactory.
Technical departments
Story - screenplay - direction: The basic story of the film is like an investigative thriller. A film of this type works only when supported by a taut screenplay. In addition to giving an interesting screenplay, Praveen Sattaru has added larger than life yet believable action sequences to make the canvas of the film huge. The movie starts with a hacker uploading a sample of data in Darjeeling followed by a chase and film ends with an intelligent climax on an oil rig. The director has written screenplay in such a way that the first scene leads to climax by revealing interesting plot points at regular intervals. However, the husband and wife scenes and humor generated should have been more appealing. Director had taken certain cinematic liberties. Most of the operations are done in coordination with police department and other departments. But, the director has shown it all as handywork of hero. In the container scene before climax, hero is tied with his hands in front where as other two characters are tied hands backwards (for the sake of allowing hero to inspect elements in container). And in the following scene when he comes out of container, his hands are tied backwards. Praveen Sattaru who had been changing genres and delivering different films has succeeded doing a big action film without losing his sensibilities. The way he handled action sequences and integrated into the main story plot is superb. Despite being a big action film, director has introduced characters of hero and heroines in most simplistic way (without build-ups) and made sure that heroism is elevated through narration.
Other departments: Cinematography by Anji and others is very good. Background music by SriCharan Pakala blends in well with visuals and carries forward the emotion. Deo Deo song does well with masses. Digital Intermediate (color correction) is good. The best part about the film are well designed action sequences. We have seen such realistic yet grand action sequences in very few Telugu films. The locations chosen are grand. The initial dam action episode is shot in Georgia. The bridge episode is shot in Thailand. The climax oil rig is located in Johar Bharu (Singapore - Malaysia border). Dialogues are written well. Editing by Dharmendra Kakarala is slick and crisp. Production values by debutant banner Jyostar are grand.
Analysis: The director Praveen Sattaru succeeds in grabbing our attention right from the first scene of the film and makes sure that the interest is sustained throughout. It’s very difficult to maintain grip in a film a that has seven huge action sequences. The interval episode is superb. The pace in second half goes down a bit. The technical aspects (hacking and explanation about plutonium etc) though executed well may find some difficulty in masses understanding it. Plus points of the film are Rajasekhar’s right performance (nothing more, nothing less, just perfect), gripping screenplay and superb action sequences. On the flipside, soft episodes (wife interaction, Pruthvi comedy etc) slackens the pace of the film. It’s difficult to make a different film, yet strike the right note on commercial aspect and director succeeds in it with this film. On a whole, PSV Garuda Vega 124.18 is a slick action thriller and you may watch it!
