Ram Gopal Varma is a man of many complexities. And he doesn’t shy away to discuss any topic. Idlebrain.com met RGV for an exclusive chitchat just a day before the release of Rakta Charitra 2. Here are the excerpts -
There is not much promotion for Rakta Charitra 2 compared to Rakta Charitra 1? Do you think people who watched part 1 will automatically come to theaters for part 2?
I think we did the same kind of promotion for both the parts. But the media has owned part 1 and promoted it aggressively by attaching many controversial aspects to it. Since media has seen the part 1 and it has nothing controversial to make till the part 2 is released.
Rakta Charitra 1 became an instant hit. What are the complaints you received from the audiences regarding part 1?
1. Some of the people didn’t like my voice-over. They felt it to be odd and too dramatic.
2. Some of them opined that the climax of the movie is abrupt.
3. Some people liked the background music a lot and some other felt that it’s too loud.
The commercial result for Rakta Charitra in Telugu and Hindi is quite opposite. How do you analyse it since it has Hindi actors predominantly?
The dynamics are different In Hindi film industry. Films do become hit on the basis of how many people watched it. It doesn’t matter whether they liked it or not. If a film is watched by 100 people it becomes a hit even if 90 people hated it. If a movie is watched by 10 people it becomes a flop even if all 10 people loved it. People decide whether to watch it or not during the promotion time. They haven’t evinced interest to watch Rakta Charitra 1. Ironically Rakta Charitra 1 generated more openings than Rann film which featured a superstar like Amitab Bachchan. Guzaarish film couldn’t even recover rentals and print cost and it features the superstar Hrithik Roshan.
Sunil said that he is playing a genuine character in Appalraju and the promotions suggest otherwise?
Katha, Screenplay, Darsakatvam: Appalraju is basically a situational comedy. The characters in the movie doesn’t do any comedy. But the comedy is generated because the situation is funny. KSD Appalaraju is the most personal film in my career. I have used many incidents from my life and the incidents from the lives of film industry’s people whom I have met in the past. Appalraju's film story is about everybody in the film industry.
Why are you instigating Chiranjeevi fans on twitter?
Twitter is a broadcasting device to share thoughts. It is an outlet to your thoughts. I put on twitter whenever I get a passing thought. That’s why I said “I knw he won't wrk wth me becos of what hpnd in the past bt I am so dyng to do a film called 'Dhora`-The lord.. with mega star chiranjeevi”. Half the people sincerely wished that my wish could become true. Others felt that I was insincere.
What about ‘I Like Orange Juice’ tweet on Orange release day?
I usually don’t like Orange juice. That day my mother gave me orange juice and strangely I liked it. Thats why I kept that tweet (giggles).
Then why did you follow it up with ‘I heard that orange is fantaaaaaaabuullllooouuusssslyy fantaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasssstttiiiccc congraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaatsss to the cast nd crew’ tweet?
Somebody sincerely told me that Orange was fantabulous and I believed them.
You are also using twitter to manipulate other actors and technicians?
Give me an example
You praised Ileana in one of the tweets?
I never though that Ileana was such a good actress till I saw her performing in rushes of ‘Nenu Naa Rakshasi’.
May be you wanted to cast her in your next film. May be it is the reason why you praised her?
If I wanted to cast her, I would have directly called her and praised her over a phone. Why should I should I praise her in twitter.
If you had praised her in phone, only she would be knowing it. If you praise her in public domain, she will be more happier since you are telling the entire public about it?
Ok. I am telling you the truth. One of the guys I know commented negatively about her when we watched rushes and I wanted to get back to him with that tweet.
See. That’s why I asked you if you were using twitter to manipulate people around you and the answer is yes!
That’s why I feel that people/media have conspiracy theories running on me all the time!!
Tell us about your immediate future projects?
My next film Amma will start in February 2011. It is an action adventure film in Indiana Jones genre which will be made in three languages. Another Hindi film ‘Department’ (sequel to Company which is narrated from cops side) will start its shoot in the end of April.
