Karthik (Sudheer Babu) is a duty-minded youngster who is chasing his career. Meghana (Nabha Natesh) is a student and an actress in short films. She is playful and is full of life. Karthik lies to his father that he is in love and had to hire Meghana to act as his lover. Rest of the story is all about how this pretending couple falls in love, actually.
Actors: Sudheer Babu maintains very good look in the film as a stoic and emotionless youngster who chases his career. He is very good in emotional scenes towards climax. He has also did well in comedy scenes where he had to tell the same dialogue in different takes. New actress Nabha Natesh gets a meaty playful role and she lives it up. She entertains and is perfect for the role of a girl who is always positive and fun. Nassar gets a vital role and does well. Varshini Sounderajan plays the role of maradalu.
Story - screenplay - direction: The story of the film is simple one. The debutant director RS Naidu did entertainment and sentimental scenes well. But faltered in writing fresh love/breakup scenes. Hero misunderstanding heroine by listening half of the conversation looks more of screenplay convenience. Another instance is when mavayya approves hero and heroine love towards climax (very convenient). One more instance is when principle spots heroine in hospital and reveals about her to hero’s father (convenient). Revealing the reason why hero has become a workaholic in the end is good. The characterization of heroine deserves a special mention. And it reflects the attitude of current generation regarding social media addiction and craving for attention through ‘likes’ on social media (I loved the scene in which heroine clicks on the ‘like button’ of her video when principle shows his phone screen to her while complaining about her. It was so quick that not many people noticed it in theater). Debutant director is good with entertainment, but need to hone his skills for big format narration.
Other departments: Cinematography by Suresh Ragutu Is nice. Songs scored by Ajaneesh B Lokanath are not attractive enough except for Inthe Inthena song. Background music is okay. Dialogues are good. Art direction by Srikanth Ramisetti is decent. Editing by Chota K Prasad is fine. Production values by Sudheer Babu Productions banner are adequate.
Analysis: Nannu Dochukunduvate is a mixed bag. It’s fresh at times and cliched at other times. What works for the film is the director’s ability to stick to the basics and then sprinkling humor as and when necessary. However, it’s a script that has more potential if dealt really well. Plus points of the film are lead actors performance and entertainment. On the flipside, a rom-com like this should be slick, vibrant and brimming (if we look at any Bollywood films with a similar theme, there is so much of slickness even if it’s shot in a village). We need to wait and see how youth and family crowds lap this romantic comedy up!
