Arjun Suravaram (Nikhil) is a young and passionate TV journalist. He is arrested by the police on the charges of forging his degree certificates and for defaulting bank loan to the tune of crores of rupees. Shocked by the event, Arjun starts investigating and finds out that there is a big gang involved in a state level scam of fake certificates and there by getting education loans worth billions. Rest of the story is all about how Arjun unearths the scam and exposes them all.
Actors: Nikhil looks good in this dynamic role and performs well in action sequences too. He is fit and energetic in the film. Lavanya Tripathi is seen on Telugu screen after a small gap (almost a year) and she looks pretty good and performs well. Satya entertains in his usual style. Vennela Kishore plays the role of a funny lawyer who never attends his work. Posani Krishna Murali gets a decent role. Tharun Arora is menacing as the villain. Kannada Kishore is impressive as an investigative officer. Nagineedu, Raja Ravindra, Pragathi and Vidyullekha Raman etc did their parts well.
Story - screenplay - direction: Arjun Suravaram is an official remake of a hit Tamil film titled Kanithan (2016). This Telugu remake is also directed by TN Santosh who directed the original version. It’s a content film which is based on the screenplay. Most of the story is based on the original film, but a few characters are added and the climax is altered. The basic plot of unearthing the cloning of certificates is narrated well. In order to appeal to all types of audiences, a bit of melodrama (father, mother characters) and comedy track (Vennela Kishore and Vidyulleka) is used. There is a lot of action orientation in the film. Director has succeeded in getting the first half right. The second half should have been more interesting. It becomes predictable as movie approaches the end. Too many action sequences are not required for a content film where suspense and screenplay should take precedence over action orientation.
Other departments: Background music by Sam CS is good. Songs are okay (no need for love songs in this film). Cinematography by Surya Mishra is very good. There are lots of scenes happening in the nighttime and the cinematographer comes up with good work. Action sequences are done well. Dialogues are decent. Editing by Naveen Nooli is alright. Production design is okay. Production values by new production house Movie Dynamics LLP are very good.
Analysis: Director Santosh comes up with an interesting story idea and a screenplay that unveils the plot point systematically. First half is interesting. Second half should have been crisp with more suspense. The director gave more orientation to action sequences than keeping the suspense factor alive in the second half. Arjun Suravaram is a breather to Nikhil who is going on a lean patch past 2016 (Ekkadiki Pothavu Chinnavada), but not good enough to make a career impact. And it stands as a better film among the releases in the recent weeks!
