Review

Story
JD (Vijay) is a popular professor in a college. He is also a lazy guy and an alcoholic. Bhavani (Vijay Sethupathi) is a gangster who uses juveniles from a school to expand his criminal empire. JD doesn't really care about anything around him until he is forced to join the juvenile home for a 3-month stint as a teacher. He straightens up once he realises that a couple of kids are killed due to his inaction. Rest of the story is all about how he gets to the bottom of it and sets things straight at juvenile home.

Artists Performance
Vijay is absolutely stylish as a lazy professor. His body language is a delight to watch. The mannerisms of Vijay as a drunkard who often falls asleep while wearing goggles during serious conversations are hilarious. He is extremely good in emotional scenes towards the climax where he tries to reform bad boys of juvenile home. Vijay Sethupathi has an author-backed role in the film and he is stunning as a baddie who uses kids to grow his criminal empire. His usual lazy elegance with subtle expressions helped the character. Malavika Mohan is good as the lady lead who is instrumental in putting the conflict together. Arjun Das is menacing as a student who involves himself in illegal activities. Andreah Jeremia has another instrumental role with an action sequence. Nassar plays a crucial role. The kid who helps the hero in the second half has a lot of swag associated with him.

Technical departments

Story - screenplay - direction: The story of the film is pretty good. Characterizations are excellent. Screenplay is good in the second half and is very predictable in the second half. Director Lokesh Kanagaraj who has done exciting films in the past has partly succeeded in this film. He has done justification to the first half. But, the tempo and narration slips away in the second half. He has introduced the villain character so well that we travel along with the character and the villain’s actions seem justified to us. He has also introduced the hero's character well by highlighting his laziness and eccentric attitude. Hero’s habit of telling film stories is pretty entertaining.

Other departments: Anirudh breathes life into characters with the background music. The vintage rock music given to the hero character adds up to the swag. The music given to the villain character is pretty good and resembles a bit of ‘Scam 1992’ web series signature music. Cinematography by Sathyan Sooran is excellent. Most of the shots are slo-mo shots and he added stylishness to those shots. Production design is pretty good. Loved that vintage car hero drives. Dialogues are well written. Fights in the film are well-choreographed. Editing by Philomin Raj is decent. Production values of the film are very good.

Analysis: Master’s first half is entertaining. Second half slows down a lot with predictable scenes and with no thrilling stuff. The plus points of the film are the two leading men, terrific characterizations for the leading men, background music and screenplay in the first half. On the flipside, the second half doesn’t offer anything. On the whole, Master film satisfies you only for the first half. A decent second half would have made wonders for the film.
