YVS Chowdary is a huge fan of Silk Smita. In our earlier conversation a couple of months back, he has recollected his memories of Silk Smita and promised us that he would give an interview during the time of 'Dirty Picture' release. Being the man who sticks to his words, he promptly called up from Bangkok despite his busy shooting schedule to share his memories of Silk Smita. Here is a special chitchat with YVS Chowdary exclusive to the visitors of idlebrain.com -
As all of you known I am a great fan of legend NTR. I was a fan of NTR at the age of 8. Generally boys get attracted to glamorous heroines by the age of 13/14. During my early teens, I was fascinated with both Sridevi and Silk Smita. Sridevi was the heroine who reached the pinnacle in her profession of heroine. Silk Smita is a girl from Eluru who initially went to Malayalam and then entered Tamil films. After proving herself in Malayalam and Tamil, she entered into Telugu film industry. She has brought super stardom to the role of Item Song Dancer, Negative Role and Vamps. I am a passionate and ardent fan of Silk Smita.
When I went to do my Mechanical Engineering in Chennai in 1983, I brought my cycle along with me from my hometown Gudiwada. Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada films were used to release directly in Madras in those days. I used to travel on my cycle to all the films that have Silk Smita doing item songs. I used to note down all her films and tick them down by watching all her films in those four languages.
At that time she used to travel in a old white fiat car (TMI 3030). I used stand in front of Vahini studios. All the actors who want to go to any studios (AVM, Vijaya Gardens, Prasad, Arunachalam, Murugalaya etc) in Madras should pass by Vahini studios first. Whenever I spot her white fiat, I used to follow her on my cycle. And none of the watchmen used to allow me inside studios. One fine day, I had an opprtunity to enter Satya Studios (like home studio of MGR) when she was shooting for a Telugu film. It was one of my most memorable moments in life when I saw my dream woman Silk Smita for the first time in flesh and blood.
After few years, I have joined Telugu film industry and started my career in direction department. It was in 1993 when I was the co-director for Ram Gopal Varma’s Govinda Govinda. We were canning ‘amma brahma devudo’ song. It was like a dream come true for me as I witnessed two of my greatest female personalities (Sridevi and Silk Smita) working together for a song (I worked with Sridevi in Jagadeka Veerudu Atiloka Sundari before that). Since we were shooting Sridevi part, RGV didn’t want Silk Smita to be left out. He has asked me to give company to Silk Smita till afternoon. It turned out to be a great opportunity express her what an ardent fan I am. I have a big file consisting of many photos of Silk Smita. I have shown her that photo album and explained how she transformed from a rusty village girl to sophisticated woman. I have also told my observation about her dressing sense, color sense and length sense. During that time my roommate Bulli (co-director of Mahesh Babu’s films) told me how Sridevi mentioned that Silk Smita is the only actress in Indian film industry after Rekha to have an amazing dressing sense and make-up sense. She felt really happy because she realised that I am a genuine fan by looking at my collection and analysis. I also used to have those liquor posters of Silk Smita exhibited in liquor shops to increase sales.
I told her that I would be making a film soon and I asked if she can be a costume designer for my films. She has promised me that she will be my costume designer. During that time, she cried that she doesn’t have a single property on her name.
I requested her to pose with me for a photo. She told me that she don’t want the film costumes (as those were too much glamourous) and said that she will come with her personal dress next day for the photograph. I have felt happy because she has acknowledged my genuine passion.
After 3 years I was told by a couple of guys who were working with Silk Smita that she enquired about me when ever she came to Hyderabad, cause in those days cell phones availability was not that much familiar. When I was working for Ninne Pelladatha (1996) at that time. Nagarjuna has already announced a project with me as a director. On 22nd September, the final mixing of Ninne Pelladatha was going on in Sujatha theater in Chennai. I wanted to meet Silk Smita on 24th September to tell the news about my first film and to sign her as costumes designer for my film. On the morning of 23 September, I heard the sad news of her untimely demise. I didn’t even had the courage to go to her funeral. Silk Smita is still alive in my heart and memories.
Silk Smita has entered film industry as a rustic girl from Eluru and a touch-up girl to heroine Chaya Devi and reached the level of sophistication where she can read English novel in just one hour time. For me she is an eternal angel with a heart of gold.
PS: I felt very happy that the director of 'The Dirty Picture' Mr Milan Lutharia is doing a film based on Silk Smita's real story (Though he is a Hindi director).
Incidentally, Mr Milan Lutharia and myself have worked as co directors for 'Criminal' hindi and telugu versions at Mahesh Bhatt. All the very best for the team of 'The Dirty Picture'..
