Sangeetha (Krithi Shetty) is the only daughter of Rayanam. He is so protective about her that he sends her to college in a bus that specially plies for her. Aasi and Sangeetha fall in love. Rayanam comes to know about it when it's too late. Rest of the story is all about what he does.
Artists Performance
Vaishnav Tej is decent for a debutant. His diction is good and his expressions are neat. He looks a little stiff in a few scenes. His height is an advantage. Krithi Shetty looks beautiful and acts well. Her performance in the climax is excellent. She is going to have a good career in Telugu if she chooses scripts carefully. After watching the first half, we might feel that Vijay Sethupathi is not needed for the film. But, you will come to know about the importance of casting Vijay Sethupathi after watching the climax. Only an actor of Vijay Sethupathi calible can deliver such a resolute performance in the climax of the film. All other actors are cast as per the demand.
Technical departments
Story - screenplay - direction: By looking at the trailer of the film, it’s evident that this film is about ‘pride and honour’ of the villain in the film. But this is not an ‘honour killing’ film. There is much more to it. Director Buchi Babu Sana comes up with a brave subject. It’s a risky proposition to make such a film in Telugu. Uppena is a film that tells the consequences of a love story between a rich girl and poor boy who are separated by the caste/religion divide in the society. The director has succeeded in telling the consequences effectively. But, he didn’t narrate the love between the lead pair interestingly in the first half. Since, it’s a kind of film that reveals the main point in the climax, the second half looks passive because we don’t know the real reason. And the second half appears convincing only after the flashback is revealed. The opening sequence of the film which is supposed to create an intriguing factor doesn't work.
Other departments: Music director Devi Sri Prasad deserves a huge pat for his outstanding music for the songs in this film. All songs are good. The success of songs have created a huge craze for the film. Background music is also good. Camerawork by Shamdat is pretty good. Production design is very good. Dialogues written by the director Buchi Babu are excellent. Editing is alright. However, we notice some scenes to be abrupt. Fights are good. Production values by Mythri Movie Makers banner are grand.
Analysis: Uppena film is not about falling in love. But, it is about staying in love despite the unpleasant consequences. Since, it's a film that makes sense in retrospect after coming to know about a vital episode in climax, the entire film runs in a passive mode. The love story in the first half should be filled with moments, but the love story is ordinary in the film. The climax of the film is about an excellent conversation between father and daughter. Plus points of the film are story, climax, Vijay Sethupathi and music. On the flipside, the director should have made the love story part (first half) more entertaining and the second half more engaging. On the whole, Uppena is a brave attempt that succeeds partly.
