Open letter to Telugu film industry

I am a Tamilian who doesn’t know or understand Telugu much. During my undergraduate days in Coimbatore, I had a friend from Vijayawada and I cannot count the number of times we ragged him saying that Telugu films were only formula films with two heroines and a rain song. For a long time I thought that the only cool movie in Telugu was Shiva.

Since I came to the US, I made some Telugu friends and started to hear and follow more about the Telugu industry. I was introduced to idlebrain.com and that only multiplied my interests. As a matter of fact, my work these days starts only after I have finished browsing this site. Today I am at a point where I adore the quality of the Telugu movies. Be is classics like Varsham, AOR, NVNV, Bommarillu or masalas like Athadu, Pokiri, Chatrapathi, etc.. these movies are really well made and technically top notch. Some of my other Tamil friends too agree with this. Similarly, the music also seems to have come a long way. The songs and the BGM in the movies are really good. Recently the only songs I have been hearing are Pokiri and Bommarillu (btw, DSP rocks with his Pa Ni Ni Sa Sa in the Appudo song). This is despite a new ARR album release in Tamil.

Coming to my request, which is mainly why I started writing this article, I like to see more of the Telugu movies dubbed or even made as a bilingual rather than just selling the remake rights. Tamil movies seem to get dubbed into Telugu pretty frequently and several have enjoyed successful runs. In fact 2005 was a year of dubbed movies with Chandramuki, Aparichitudu, Ghajini, Premisthe etc..making it big. But Telugu movies never seem to get dubbed into Tamil these days. A while back, some Nagarjuna, Rajasekar, Chiranjeevi and Vijayshanthi movies used to get dubbed and some of them did have successful runs. But of late, looks like the Telugu producers are content with just selling the remake rights. It may make good business sense for them to do that. But it is unfortunate that the talent of the original makers, technicians and artists are not showcased to a wider audience.

When I saw movies like NVNV, I was so impressed (to the extent that I started seeing MS Raju’s previous movies on DVD). I was really hoping that they would dub that movie into Tamil so that my friends, family and other Tamilians too could enjoy the same. But that did not happen and eventually it ended up being remade. The remake was pretty good, but anyone who saw the original would agree that Siddhartha’s performance was far better. In some cases the remakes are just terrible and don’t do any justice to the original.

I’m surprised why they never dub Mahesh Babu and Prabhas movies when every Vikram and Surya movies are dubbed.. These guys can mesmerize any audience with their performance. If only movies like Athdu, Pokiri and Chatrapathi were dubbed, they would have been super hits in Tamil as well. And I hope even off-beat movies like AOR get dubbed. I saw most of these movies on screen without sub-titles (I wish they did have like Hindi movies) but I was still able to follow it pretty well simply because of the good acting and expressions. And I also thoroughly enjoyed the music and technical brilliance in these movies. I wish more people had the chance to see and appreciate it. Like how Telugu movie lovers welcome dubbed Tamil movies with open arms, I’m sure Tamil movie lovers will welcome these wonderful Telugu movies.

On a side note, I like to say that this website is a nice advertisement to the Telugu film industry apart from the quality of the movies itself. A simple testimony of that is the fact that I decided to spend my $10 on Bommarillu instead of the powerfully star studded KANK. The 4.5 literally dragged me in to the theatre. I personally liked NVNV better, but no doubt that this was another master piece. With such movies my admiration of Telugu films keeps growing and my best wishes to the industry and this website……
