Open letter to Telugu film industry

To whomsoever it may concern,

In the very beginning let me admit that I am a proud Andhrite and I love watching Telugu movies. However, personally, it has increasingly become difficult to understand what a good Telugu movie is. It gets even more difficult with movies getting classified as straight movies (this was the hardest to figure out!!!), remakes, classics and masalas.

Whenever there is a cultural onslaught, the first casualty is always the language. I simply cannot follow half the dialogues. Is it me, my ears or the dubbing artists? Or is it a new Telugu that has evolved and I have failed to keep up. Why does one need to concentrate so hard to understand what the characters are trying to say? Why is there always so much chaos in the name of drama? Or I am I the only one feeling it? Perhaps not, why else would the Godavari crew insist that they had created something which feels like a ‘cool breeze.

There were times when I would have my non-telugu speaking friends come over to watch some good telugu movies. Movies that I felt proud about as an Andhrite those which touched the heart and you felt selfish if your friends couldn’t watch them. Nowadays, I feel embarrassed even while watching them alone. Do people who make these movies ever sit with their close friends and family to watch them? Do they enjoy doing it? Do they feel a certain pride in their creation? Do we need to go to such extremes to let a common man understand what a movie is trying to tell? Or is there a crash course on 'telugu movie appreciation' that I need to complete.

The Telugu film industry is synonymous with the record number of films that it churns out every year. The sky is filled with a galaxy of superstars, stars and wannabe stars. So many budding heroes and heroines the bitter truth being that only few will attain their maturity! How many of them really know what they are doing out there? Or do they not care? One just needs to look at the homepage of idlebrain which is desperately trying to accommodate all the names, dates, releases, functions and occasional tributes. The industry is on mass production with absolutely no one to check the quality of the final product. It is in dire need of line managers and quality controllers.

Even if one loses ground arguing along the lines of these sentiments, I am sure one could easily win by dragging some economics. Money talk never fails. Why can’t we deliver few quality products per year rather than so many duds which fade away without a mention? Why waste so much time, money, efforts and resources on creating such below average productions?
